Asphalt Pavers
Periodic inspection of asphalt pavers: hopper-conveyor, screed lift organs, fuel-heating systems and brake-warning checks by engineers, with signed reports.
Asphalt paver periodic inspection is the at-least-annual examination by authorised engineers of self-propelled paving machines spreading and pre-compacting hot asphalt mix through a hopper-conveyor-screed line: feeder conveyor and pinch organs, screed lift-travel hydraulics, the heating system (propane/diesel), travel-brake and operator-pedestrian warning gear are assessed. Paving is the highest-risk activity of road works due to hot bitumen burns, conveyor crushes and shared-field accidents with feed trucks.
Inspection Items
- Hopper and conveyors: Wing fold locks, conveyor paddle-chain wear-tension and pinch points; discharge (striker) guard; material build-up cleaning (hot asphalt burn risk).
- Screed: Lift tubes-cylinders and drift test; vibrator and tamper/impactor organs, screed heating (electric/gas) thermostat-insulation; side extension locks. Contact with the hot screed face burns; maintenance position lock is mandatory.
- Fuel-heat: LPG cylinder-regulator-hose leak control and valves, diesel burner service, extinguisher; enclosed space-heater distance rules.
- Travel-brake: Independent hydrostatic drive per track, sync and brake; park brake; gradient holding; push-roller behaviour with feed trucks and frame strain.
- Vision-warning-electrical: Rear camera, blind spot alert, beacon-siren, horn; platform guardrail-non-slip deck; TS EN 60204-1 insulation-earthing; noise-dust suppression.
Periodic Tests and Measurements
The screed lift test measures drift at full raise and verifies the mechanical service block — work under the screed is forbidden without it. Conveyor tests run chain tension at empty and representative load, lock and stop trials with pinch-zone guards on interlock function. The LPG circuit is checked with foam/sensor leak test and valve-regulator pressure; diesel burner flame-loss cut-off is tried. The travel test measures track brake holding and straight-line sync (course drift); slope edge work limits are compared with manufacturer data. Thermal scan covers engine-transmission-pump-panel hot spots; noise and dust emissions are compared with OEL.
Legislation and Standards
Paving machines are subject to at least annual periodic control under Law No. 6331, the Work Equipment Regulation and the 2006/42/EC Machinery Directive. Technical references: general safety TS EN 474-1 with the asphalt paver type part TS EN 474-8, rollover ISO 3471, gas side TS EN 16437 (LPG installation approach) and gas regulations, visibility ISO 5006, fluid power ISO 4413. Hot mix handling and paving are critical activities requiring PPE (thermal gloves, safety boots, long sleeves) and a site traffic plan supervised by the OHS specialist.
Risks, Recommendations and Outcome
Typical accidents: hot material contact burns (screed and conveyor zone), conveyor entrapment (hand into channel), LPG fire and truck-paver collision. Hence LOTO and mechanical locks during screed/conveyor service, thermal PPE and long gloves, and a truck push procedure (spotter at the push point) must become rules. Daily shift checks try brake-horn-reverse alarm-screed lock. Facilities are recommended a monthly LPG leak test routine, a conveyor chain service band and joint operator-worker field safety training. FAQ on Asphalt Pavers
A paver carries hot asphalt (140-160 °C) by conveyor-auger and spreads-levels it with the screed-foot heated plate. Risks: hot-asphalt-heated-plate contact burns (cleaning-maintenance), auger-conveyor entrapment (no lock-out), ignition-burn-exposure of the heating system (gas-electric), narrow-area truck-loading reverse strike-pedestrian, vibration-noise-dust-fume (respiratory), and brake-travel-screed feed control.
