Circular Saw

Periodic inspection of circular saw machines: blade guards, riving knife, anti-kickback devices, emergency stop and dust extraction checks with signed reports.

Circular saw periodic inspection is the at-least-annual audit by authorised engineers of table circular saws and handheld circular saws in wood and plastic industry: cutter disc guarding, riving knife (splitter), anti-kickback devices, axis locks, emergency stop and dust extraction are examined. Circular saws rank among machine types with the highest rate of hand-amputation injuries; therefore the functionality — not mere presence — of guards is essential.

Critical Safety Organs

  • Upper and lower blade guard: Spring-loaded self-adjusting upper cover; the sub-table cover enclosing the disc — both checked for fitting, free movement and absence of cracks-looseness.
  • Riving knife: The thinner-than-kerf splitter aligned to the disc preventing kerf closure onto the blade; its adjustment and integrity (EN 1870-3 rules).
  • Anti-kickback: Anti-kickback pawls or electronic brake system; stopping time measurement of the electric brake.
  • Table and fence: Mitre gauge rail clearance, table flatness; workpiece holding aids (push stick accessibility).
  • Dust extraction: Manifold flow, hose clogging, fire-explosion risk management (ignition of accumulated chips).

Periodic Tests and Measurements

  • Guard and riving knife function: Spring tension, movement clearance and disc-riving knife alignment measurement; lock of the eccentric adjuster.
  • Emergency stop and brake: Disc stop time after pressing stop (compared to manufacturer value on braked types); restart blocking.
  • Electrical: TS EN 60204-1; earthing continuity, insulation resistance, motor thermal and contactor; switch-IP protection.
  • Mechanical: Disc bearing clearance, arbor wear, belt tension and guard; vibration-abnormal sound scan.
  • Occupational health: Noise, chip throw, dust concentration (exposure limits); face shield, safety shoe and close clothing rule; no-hand-cutting ban plate.

Legislation and Standards

Woodworking machines are subject to at least annual periodic control under Law No. 6331 and the Work Equipment Regulation. Technical reference: table saw safety TS EN 1870-3, the TS EN 61029 / TS EN 847-1 family approach for hand-held saws, general woodworking safety TS EN 1869, electrics TS EN 60204-1 and TS EN ISO 12100. Under the regulation a circular saw without guard or riving knife may not be used; the finding is critical and the machine is taken out of service.

Risks, Recommendations and Outcome

The deadliest scenario is kickback: in resinous, warped or undried stock the kerf closes onto the disc and the part is thrown toward the operator's body. Riving knife and pawl maintenance cannot be neglected; resin-polymer build-up on the disc raises friction producing burn and kickback risk, so periodic disc cleaning is essential. Removing guards "because they block visibility" is recorded as the leading cause of finger losses in the sector. Facilities are recommended a push-stick station, kerf marking lines, LOTO on blade change and earthing of the dust collection bin against explosion. The classic accident is the cut part closing onto the blade and kicking back, throwing the piece into the operator body-face-arm line. Another is hand contact with the tooth ring and a loose-broken tooth projectile. Control builds on the spring retractable blade guard, the riving knife setting, anti kickback pawls, feed rollers, the push stick rule, the braking stop and the dust extraction-explosion prevention set.

The guard open-close and re-close trip function, the riving knife coplanar-fit with the blade and the pawl spring grip are trialled. Flange nut torque, tooth wear-crack and runout are checked by vibration-thermal scanning. The motor brake stop time is measured; fence lock flatness, table surface, extraction nozzle air speed and leaking pipes are audited. Insulation, earthing, bonding and RCD measurements, paddle-mushroom stop and keyed start, work light and the CE max speed-diameter label (blade within the limit) close the trial.

Faulty-bypassed-removed guard (bare teeth), missing-misadjusted riving knife (kickback cause), dull-missing pawls, broken-worn teeth with excessive runout, brake beyond limit time (still spinning on release), no start-lock or dead emergency stop, dead extraction or clogged filter or perforated pipe (fire-explosion-breathing risk), faulty RCD-earth or a loose sliding fence: the saw is red-tagged. Return follows guard cut-time and riving adjustment verification.

Engineer examination yearly, six-monthly on heavy dusty series production together with filter and explosion-cleaning. Manufacturer calendar: blade sharpening, flange-arm cleaning, belt tension-bearing lubrication. Daily: guard-knife-pawl sight and idle brake trial; monthly: extraction differential pressure reading; yearly: mechanical runout-axle and electrical measurement. Training: kickback reaction on cross-cut slip, push-stick hand distance, blade change under LOTO. Report, log, maintenance and training records enter the OHS file; eye-face and mask use is audited.
