Sheet metal working machine periodic inspection is the at-least-annual audit by authorised engineers of shaping machines other than guillotine and corner shears — rolling machines (pins), section benders, flangers, punches and combination cells: guarding-locking organs, hydraulic-safety equipment, workpiece clamping and moving die-consumable compatibility are examined. The dominant risks in this group are crush/pinch point accidents and sharp-edge lacerations.
Equipment in Scope and Critical Organs
- Rolling machine: Pinch zones between three-four rolls, emergency stop access (panic rope-button included), roll covers and reversing control; workpiece support (platform) — heavy sheet falling onto the operator.
- Section bending / mandrel: Die jaw locking, hydraulic hold-down table fall protection and two-hand control; speed-limited set-up mode.
- Flanging-punch and combination shears: Light curtain at the die zone, quick-clamp integrity, upper table brake; burr-ejection screen.
- Common hydraulics: Relief valve, sealing (leak = slip-floor fire hazard), accumulator and line-break valve; pressure gauge.
- Electrical: TS EN 60204-1; earthing-insulation-RCD, safety PLC and brake monitor; cable damage and thermal scan.
Periodic Tests and Measurements
- Pinch zones: Enclosure of roll-jaw transitions; test-rod verification on sensing protection and safety distance measurement (TS EN ISO 13855).
- Fall and holding: Hold-down-upper table hold (drift) test; pneumatic-hydraulic support valves; emergency descent behaviour.
- Tooling: Die clamping clearance, wear and notch control; table forcing from mismatched die.
- Function: Set-up speed reduction verification, interlock delay measurement, selectivity (cascade) and two-hand synchronisation.
- Environment: Noise, cut-resistant gloves, oil mist-emission, lighting; stacking-handling safety (sheet edge injuries).
Legislation and Standards
Sheet metal machines are subject to at least annual periodic control under Law No. 6331 and the Work Equipment Regulation. Technical references: TS EN 12100-2 (general safety for cold metal forming) for rolling and bending, TS EN 12622 for bending presses, the TS EN 866 family (corner shears) for punch-combinations, TS EN ISO 4413 for hydraulic safety, TS EN 60204-1 for electrics and TS EN ISO 14119/14120 for guards-interlocks. Lifting-storage equipment on integrated lines falls under lifting legislation too.
Risks, Recommendations and Outcome
Rolling machine accidents come from roll-to-roll pinch and uncontrolled reversing loading the heavy workpiece onto the operator: a shift panic-stop test is essential. Failing to set die clearance to material thickness ejects the part and breaks tooling. Wet floors from hydraulic leaks produce slip accidents during handling — drip trays and cleaning procedure are required. Facilities are recommended a cut-resistant glove standard, material support stations, LOTO on die change and accredited annual record of brake-valve testing. At the end of the examination a signed report with findings is issued. The forming group outside press brakes: roll bending, notching-punching, section bending, seaming-flanging and hydraulic shaping presses. Shared hazards: hand-arm in the tool shear gap (feeding-withdrawing), nip-point pull-crush between rollers, hydraulic injection-splash, thrown workpiece and burr-metal splash. Control builds on tool zone light curtains, feeding mechanism clamp-vacuum safety and the hydraulic safety set (burst valve, load holding, limit alarm cut) with electrical earthing and RCD.
Per tool zone: curtain trip-cut test with safety distance, two-hand simultaneity and single-stroke anti-repeat mode are verified; tool clamp bolt torque and crack-deformation are examined. On rolls the nip-point guard-fence safety is tried. Hydraulically: pressure limit alarm cut, load-holding burst valve, cylinder leak-fall, pump level-temperature-filter differential and valve block are tested. Electrically: insulation-earthing-bonding-RCD, start lock and emergency stop; mechanically: bearing-cam-belt cover-brake; environment: oil fire, noise-dust; capacity (material-thickness) label and CE manual reviewed.
Bypassed dead curtain (hand in tool zone), broken anti-repeat single-stroke function (second-blow accident), lagging two-hand or single-hand trigger, cracked-deformed loose tool, missing sliding nip guard, leaking load-holding valve (press drop), disabled pressure safety, failed insulation-earthing-RCD or dead start-lock stop: red tag. Repair verification closes with guard cut-stop time, tool torque and hydraulic limit; tool change runs under authorised LOTO with mechanical block.
Engineer examination yearly; the daily curtain trip test and weekly test log plus manufacturer maintenance (hydraulic oil filter, valve balance) run as interim care. Six-monthly checks suit heavy automotive sheet lines; tool shelf storage (lubrication-corrosion-deformation) is also audited. Training: tool clamp sequence torque under LOTO, two-hand palm position, part stability against projectiles, jog speed restraint, eye-face shield. Report, guard log, tool test, maintenance instruction and certificates collect in the OHS file for audit and insurance.
