Dump Trucks

Dump truck periodic inspection is the at-least-annual audit by authorised engineers of tipper trucks in mining, quarry, site and excavation haulage: body lift-hinge organs with safety pin, hydraulic lift-brake gear, chassis-turntable connections, brakes-retarder, load-rear vision and tipping limits are examined. Dump truck incidents stand out for raised-body power line contact, tipping and brake failure with severe consequences.

Inspection Items

  • Body and lifting: Lift cylinder leak-chrome control; safety pin-lock mechanism in full raise and service position (body descent during maintenance crushes); hinge joint crack and wear.
  • Chassis and turntable: Torsion zone and turntable bolts; parabolic leaf springs, track rod-rod ends integrity; welded repair trace on body-frame.
  • Brakes-retarder: Service-park performance (distance-gradient), ABS/ESC presence, retarder and exhaust brake behaviour; lining-drum wear and cooling (long descent scenario). Trailer brake dialogue where fitted.
  • Load and balance: Overload traces (springs, tyres, frame cracks); lock-cover, tipping load-centre calculation; shovel coordination and overfill policy.
  • Vision-warning-electrical: Rear camera-sensor, blind spot cameras (right pedestrian side priority), beacon, audible reverse alarm; lamps-brake signals and earthing; raised body power line upper limit device if any.

Periodic Tests and Measurements

Body function test: full raise-lower cycle, drift measurement in raised position and mechanical verification of the safety pin-lock; the hydraulic safety valve is tried in a hose burst scenario. Braking runs loaded stopping distance and gradient holding in a closed safe area, combined with retarder continuous-brake temperature (overheating burns the lining). Turntable bolts are torque checked; hinge-cylinder examined visually and by caliper; rotation play creates manoeuvre instability. Thermal scan covers brake drums, turntable bearing and exhaust hot spots. Cabin sight lines and blind spots enter the report as a schematic map.

Legislation and Standards

Dump trucks are governed by Law No. 6331, the Work Equipment Regulation, site machine rules and on the road side by the Highway Traffic Law with type approval legislation. References: weight-dimension rules (96/53/EC type), brakes ECE R13, mirrors-vision ECE R46, tipping protection relevant ISO, hydraulic body side ISO 4413 and load securing the EN 12195 series. Inside mines and closed sites, the Work Equipment Regulation's periodic control clause applies.

Risks, Recommendations and Outcome

The most frequent fatal event is passing under a power line with the body raised: the lowered-body rule on internal line crossings and a marked approach distance are essential. Entering under the body without the maintenance safety pin is the main crush cause. Overfill produces both tipping and overload; the loader operator must work with a box-crown-line policy. On long descents, brake-heat management (low gear, retarder) prevents accidents. Facilities are recommended a daily body-brake-camera checklist, periodic brake-retarder service band and operator blind spot training. At the end of the examination a signed report is issued.
