Milling Machines

Periodic inspection of milling machines: spindle guard, tool clamping, table locking, emergency stop and electrical checks by engineers, with signed reports.

Milling machine periodic inspection is the at-least-annual audit by authorised engineers of vertical and horizontal milling machines that cut material on the table with a rotating cutter: guards and safety equipment during machining are verified. The control covers the spindle guard fitted on the machine, table brake, cooling-drainage integrity, electric-automation and the emergency stop chain. Milling accidents concentrate in two modes: hand contact with the cutter and ejected piece-chip (projectile).

Critical Safety Organs

  • Spindle and guard: Spring-loaded mill guard, adjustable shroud; prohibition of cutting without the guard and guard integrity.
  • Tool clamping and runout: Collet-chuck-nut rigidity; radial-axial runout measurement (dial indicator) — rupture risk in excessive clearance; rpm-tool diameter match (max rpm label).
  • Workpiece holding: Vice-T-slot-bolt locking; wear of clamping plates; risk of setup ejection.
  • Table motions: Manual versus automatic feed distinction; table brake, reversing lock; axis limit switches and end buffers.
  • Coolant and evacuation: Jet spray splash screen, conveyor pinch points, tank hygiene (oil mist, microbial).

Periodic Tests and Measurements

  • Interlock/guard function tests (TS EN ISO 14119/14120); spindle rotation blocked with guard open and stop time.
  • Emergency stop chain: spindle and axis behaviour, braking time; table holding on power cut (no sag).
  • Electrical: TS EN 60204-1; earthing-insulation, RCD; panel-console IP, thermal monitoring; cable chain wear.
  • Mechanical: spindle-screw bearing clearance, belt tension and cover, gearbox level; vibration and abnormal sound scan.
  • Occupational health: oil mist extraction flow, noise, lighting; face shield policy against chip ejection; steel toe shoe and glove rules (glove ban near rotating parts).

Legislation and Standards

Mills are subject to at least annual periodic control under the Work Equipment Regulation and the maintenance-test duty of Law No. 6331. Technical reference: general machine tool safety TS EN 1729-1, milling machines TS EN ISO 16089, TS EN 60204-1 for electrics, TS EN ISO 14119/14120 for guards-interlocks and TS EN ISO 12100 for risk principles. Risks, Recommendations and Outcome

Common field errors are removing the spindle guard so thin cuts "are visible" and hand-cleaning the table near the running spindle. Collet-less or damaged tooling and rpm label violation (large tool at high speed) produce rupture. Facilities are recommended dial runout after each tool change, cutting parameter cards (speed-feed), no-guard-no-cut rule and shift spindle brake testing. At the end of the control a signed report with measurements and findings is issued. Engineer examination yearly under the Work Equipment Regulation; the machine maintenance calendar (spindle-bearing lubrication, coolant filter, brake pad check) as interim care. Daily: guard-vice-brake check; written cutter-change rules in operator training; glove-sleeve-doff rules (no cutter contact).
