CNC machining centre periodic inspection is the at-least-annual audit by authorised engineers of vertical machining centres, CNC lathes and multi-axis (5-axis, grind-cut combined) machining machines: enclosure and door locking, the program safety chain, servo stop organs, chip-coolant hygiene and electrical equipment are assessed. On CNC tools the risk arises from operators lulled by the closed-cabin perception entering the automatic motion zone.
Critical Safety and Health Organs
- Door interlock: No rapid motion with the door open; locked stop at the automatic tool changer and pallet changer zones; non-defeatability of door sensors (TS EN ISO 14119 category).
- Emergency stop chain: Axis brake time, spindle stop, coolant and lighting control; restart blocking on reset.
- Internal protection accessories: Spray curtain (light barrier) or laser monitoring; work area lighting; window panel soundness.
- Chip-fluid management: Chip fling covers, conveyor pinch zones, coolant spray-ageing (biocide/microbial risk) and disposal; filter maintenance.
- Electrical-servo: TS EN 60204-1 earthing-insulation; servo amplifier brake/regeneration; encoder position safety; panel temperature-thermography.
Periodic Control and Measurements
- Interlock test: Function verification of each door and service cover separately; delay measurement; lock integrity and key access control.
- Stop times: Axis and spindle stop timing; position verification after overrun; fall prevention on power cut (Z-axis brake).
- Safety PLC / software: Audit of soft limits, safe speed monitoring (SSM/SLS), override records; firmware version.
- Hygiene-OHS: Oil mist concentration, noise, extraction flow; biocide and fluid change records; ergonomics (height, loading).
- Structural: Cabin sheet impact marks, way cover bellows, hydraulic-pneumatic line integrity, extinguisher (oil fire rated) and leakage tray.
Legislation and Standards
CNC tools are subject to at least annual periodic control under Law No. 6331 and the Work Equipment Regulation. Technical references: general machine tool safety TS EN 1729-1 / TS EN ISO 23125 and TS EN 12417 for machining centres, the EN 12478 family approach for CNC lathes, TS EN 60204-1 for electrics, TS EN ISO 13849 (PLr verification) for functional safety and TS EN ISO 14119 for interlocks. With automatic cells and robot integration, ISO 10218/EN 20738 robot safety also enters scope.
Risks, Recommendations and Outcome
The leading non-compliance is bridging the door interlock to shorten cycle, or shimming the latch to open early; traces are questioned in the control. In addition, the operator habit of "running with the door open" on machines without safety blocks causes automatic-motion accidents. Facilities are recommended a set-up mode and speed-clamp policy, periodic microbiological control of coolant, window-bellows crack tracking and thermographic panel scans. At the end of the examination a signed periodic inspection report is issued. A yearly engineer examination is mandatory under the Work Equipment Regulation; monthly test logs for critical functions (e-stop-interlock) are the manufacturer performance standard (ISO 13849, PL d class). The CE conformity-risk assessment-manual are checked and the operator authority list updated. Budgeted removal: faulty safety relay update-backup, program-workpiece holder calibration, door switch change with verification; results report levelled suggestions.
Dead-wireless emergency stop, bypassed-faulty door interlock (running with open door), disabled hard limit (axis overrun collision), axis brake-servo drop, broken earth-bonding or failed RCD, coolant-oil fire risk (vapour pooling) or shattered ejection glass: red tag. These produce tool fires, lost limbs and thrown parts; return after a function test (PLe verification) and LOTO maintenance with a cabin-entry and evacuation protocol by instruction.
