Electric Pallet Truck

Periodic inspection of electric pallet trucks and tow tractors: lift hydraulics, drive and brakes, battery and safety devices checked by authorised engineers.

Electric pallet truck periodic inspection is the examination and testing, at least annually by authorised engineers, of battery trucks whose lifting is powered by an electric pump and which move the palletised load by themselves. Lift, travel and brake organs, the electric-battery equipment and operator safety are assessed. Pedestrian and rider models, along with tow tractor types, are evaluated within this scope.

Inspection-Focused Organs of the Electric Pallet Truck

Unlike the manual type, an electric pallet truck hosts a travel motor, a controller and a battery pack; the risk profile grows with this added hardware:

  • Lift pump and ram unit (the hydraulic examination inherited from the manual type)
  • Travel motor, gearbox and drive wheel (rim and surface grip)
  • Electric brake system (electromagnetic / oil-immersed) with automatic holding
  • Battery pack (lead-acid or Li-ion), BMS, connector and charger
  • Control tiller: direction-speed control, horn switch, emergency stop cap
  • Stability chassis and (on rider models) overhead protection

Periodic Inspection Items

  • Hydraulics: Load lift-drift test, seal and valve leakage; same items as for manual trucks.
  • Travel and brake: Full stop distance with load, automatic brake application (stopping when the tiller is released), gradient holding; ramp rollback prevention function.
  • Emergency stop: Cut-off test of the cap/bail; stopping behaviour on control failure (cable break).
  • Battery and electrical: Electrolyte level and terminal burning, insulation resistance, BMS fault logs (Li-ion), earthing continuity; charger cable and plug integrity.
  • Telemetry (if any): Reading hours, fault and impact logs as evaluation input.
  • Structural: Chassis weld zones, fork roots, rub and impact marks; wheel and roller wear measurements.

Legislation and Standards

Electric pallet trucks are subject to periodic control at least once a year under Law No. 6331 and the Work Equipment Regulation. Technical references: TS EN ISO 3691-1 and ISO 3691-2 (powered), the ISO 22915 series for design safety, manufacturer instructions for battery and charging, and TS EN 60204-1 approaches for electrical installations. The charging station separately requires fire, gassing and ventilation assessment in lead-acid applications.

Risks and Operator Recommendations

The most critical field findings are delayed brake adjustment and a broken or bypassed emergency stop cap. Entrapment of the pedestrian operator by the drive wheel (foot crush) is the known heaviest injury type; automatic slow-down and tip-over logic must be stressed in training. With acid batteries, neglecting level and charge management reduces capacity; on Li-ion systems, impact and overheat traces must be followed from BMS logs. Slip of the drive wheel on wet floors lengthens the stopping distance — tread condition enters the report. Dragging the pallet while travelling relates to fork angle and speed; the ramp direction rule must be fixed in training.

Outcome
