Industrial Doors

Periodic inspection of sectional and high-speed doors: torsion springs, break brake, cable-rail and photocell checks by authorised engineers.

Industrial door periodic inspection is the at-least-annual examination and testing of sectional, high-speed (PVC), sliding and roller doors working under heavy traffic in factories, warehouses and logistics facilities: lifting-tension springs, spring break safety, cable-pulley system, rail and slat connections, safety photocells, motor-control set and the fire scenario (closure) function are verified. The size and moving mass of your gate turn these doors into potential falling-load machines.

Inspection Items

  • Spring group: Tension-length control of both spring bundles, broken-wire and fatigue search; verification of the spring break safety sitting loose on the spring yet ready to lock — the life-saving clause of EN 13241.
  • Cable-pulley: Broken wires, rust and sheave groove condition; drum spooling quality and termination fittings.
  • Curtaim and rail: Panel-hinge-stitch connections, rail brackets, guide rollers; rail alignment, inclination and cleanliness (soiling causes derailment).
  • Safety devices: Photocell/safety beam detection test, geared motor and emergency stop, manual chain-hand operation, moving edge crush protection (safety profile).
  • Automation: PLC-control box functions; dialogue of fire-signal closure-opening with detection systems (within the Fire Buildings Regulation), bottom light barrier on high-speed doors.

Legislation and Standards

As work equipment, industrial doors must be inspected at least annually under Law No. 6331 and the Work Equipment Regulation. Technical reference: TS EN 13241-1 (industrial doors safety product standard) and TS EN 12453 (safety of power-operated doors), electrics TS EN 60204-1. A motorised door without spring brake, safety profile or photocell, or with a seized one, receives a "not usable" report; compartment doors additionally plan TS EN 1634-1 leakage-smoke tests.

Risks and Operator Recommendations

The heaviest failure model is curtain free-fall after spring break in brakeless doors; hence spring-brake dialogue must join the shift check. Forklift impact on high-speed doors damages rail and panels: an impacted rail must be corrected immediately and bumpers placed in strike zones. Winter ice-snow in the rail causes derailment and motor strain; a seasonal maintenance calendar is recommended. "Do not wait under the door" training and barrier warnings must be standardised at pedestrian gates. Spring and cable replacement times are entered into the maintenance plan by trending control results.

Spring-cord break, photocell and automatic stop safety controls on sectional, high-speed and sliding doors.

On balanced sectional doors, failure of the load-bearing torsion spring and cable causes an uncontrolled fall of the door, while entrapment at the bottom edge causes crushing-cutting. PVC fast doors carry arm-hair entrapment risk, sliding doors a derail-overturn risk. That is why TS EN 13241 (product) and TS EN 12453 (safety-control) rules mandate spring-break protection, cable-drum safety, photocell and edge safety with automatic reversal, and require yearly maintenance-control.

The spring-break arrester (locks the door when a spring snaps), cable-break drum safety, bottom-edge contact safety (sensing profile) and photocell beam test are trialled. On motorised doors the automatic stop-reopen (on contact), closing force limitation, emergency stop, manual-automatic changeover and locking, brake (no drift), open-closed limit switches are tested. Rail-runner-hinge-roller, spring tension-balancing, seal-threshold tightness, leaf deformation-corrosion, warning plates and the CE-mark-capacity label are checked.

No or dead spring-break arrester, bypassed cable-drum safety, bypassed-faulty photocell-edge safety (door hitting a person-object), dead emergency stop, slipping brake (door drifting), broken balancing (door will not hold, falls by hand), heavily worn rail-runner: these bar the door under red tag. Replacement of tension parts like springs and cables is done only by authorised service with the right part, under locked-out energy; a mis-set spring tension produces a dangerous fall.

One professional maintenance-control per year per the manufacturer manual is the basis; daily operator observation (abnormal sound-jam-threshold-seal) and a logged monthly photocell-edge test and manual changeover are run. Lubrication-rail cleaning, seal-runner change and motor-brake setting are planned items. The report carries function test values, replaced parts, finding level and follow-up suggestion; it stays in the OHS file, and on high-traffic doors (goods-lift-dock) the maintenance rate rises with the cycle count.
