Monorail systems periodic inspection is the at-least-annual examination and testing, by authorised engineers, of monorail conveyors and monorail crane lines that perform suspended handling on closed or semi-closed circuits. The carrier rail and support structure, trolley units, chain-belt drive and tensioning organs and the safety equipment are assessed. As a continuously moving system, a broken part or rail damage can cascade; therefore the control period is applied strictly.
System Components and Scope
A monorail system consists of the rail fixed to the carrier structure, carrier trolleys on the rail, a motor-gearbox chain or belt drive for motion and tension-return wheels. Capacity varies with the hanger; in-line curves, switches and stations are examined separately. Key inspected items:
- Rail, joints (clamp-connectors), tie rods and the carrier structure connection
- Carrier trolleys: wheel-rim-bearing, hook and lock pin, hanger rod
- Drive unit: gear, chain-belt, gearbox, brake and take-up
- Tension system and turn rails, braked descent ramps
- Safety: overload limiter, break detection, on-rail obstruction and hot zones; stations for loading-unloading
Periodic Inspection Items
- Rail and supports: Flange wear, clamp tightness, support spacing and sway; fatigue traces at welds; rail alignment and span measurement.
- Trolley group: Wheel rim and channel wear, bearing clearance-noise, hook latch and pin control; trolley body cracks.
- Drive and tensioning: Chain elongation measurement, gear profile wear, belt tension; tension weight-screw position; brake holding test.
- Safety devices: Function test of overload limiter and chain-break catcher if fitted; emergency stop pull lines and warning lights; guard-cover and switch dialogue.
- Function test: Full empty and loaded trip: speed, brake stopping distance, curve-switch passage, station position accuracy; load sag and strike control on the rail.
- Environment: In paint oven, chemical and hot lines, thermal expansion joints, corrosion and dust accumulation are evaluated additionally.
Legislation and Standards
As lifting and handling equipment, monorail systems are subject to annual periodic control under Law No. 6331 and the Work Equipment Regulation. Technical references: TS EN 1090 for the steel carrier connections, manufacturer specification for chain-belt drives, ISO 17704 (wire rope), the 2006/42/EC Machinery Directive and TS EN ISO 12100 risk assessment rules for machine safety. The rail's connection to the carrier structure — being the parameter that sets capacity — is expected to rest on a static calculation basis.
Risks and Operator Recommendations
The heaviest scenario is a rail segment dropping during handling due to support loosening or clamp failure, with cascading trolley derailment. Therefore support tightness and rail connectors must be measured as trends. Hanging the load without a closed trolley hook lets the load leave the line and fall; latch control at stations must enter the shift list. Chain elongation in the drive pushes the take-up to its limit and skips gears; take-up position is a maintenance indicator. In ovens and drying lines, high temperature changes lubrication and material selection — manufacturer temperature limits must be respected. Personnel walkways must not pass under the line, and crossing points must be barrier-separated.
Outcome
