Periodic inspection of machines and machine tools is the at-least-annual examination and testing, by authorised engineers, of machines used for machining, forming, cutting and joining in workshops and factories: movable part guards, safety interlocks, emergency stop chains, brake-holding systems, electrical equipment and ergonomic safety elements are verified. The aim is to prove with criteria that every barrier and stop function protecting the operator's limbs really works while the machine runs.

Common Systems Examined

Although each machine family has its own tests, the periodic control is built on these shared layers:

  • Enclosure and locking: Fixed guards, door interlock switches, adjustable barriers; verification that the lock prevents door opening while the machine runs (EN ISO 14119).
  • Sensing protection: Response-time and detection-angle tests of light curtains, laser/wireless protection fields, two-hand controls and dead-man devices (safety distance verification per TS EN ISO 13855).
  • Stop performance: Emergency stop chain category (PL/SIL assessment), brake stopping time and stability; free-motion risk after power cut (falling, overrun).
  • Electrical safety: Earthing continuity and insulation resistance per TS EN 60204-1, residual current protection, panel-IP class and labelling.
  • Other: Lubrication-gearbox seepage, workpiece clamping and chock control, chip-coolant spray measures, dust-fume extraction, noise and lighting; review of maintenance records.

Legislation and Standards

The legal base is Law No. 6331 and the Regulation on Health and Safety Conditions in the Use of Work Equipment; without a standard or manufacturer recommendation, machine park inspection applies as a yearly rule. Technical references: risk assessment and safety distances in TS EN ISO 12100 and TS EN ISO 13857, barriers and interlocks in TS EN ISO 14119/14120, machine electrics in TS EN 60204-1, and product safety (2006/42/EC, the new-approach TS EN series) per machine type. The EC declaration of conformity and the user manual are the first documents checked.

Risks, Recommendations and Outcome

The overwhelming majority of machine accidents trace to two root causes: defeated protection (bypass, removed door, silenced alarm) and continued motion after stopping (drifting brake, overrun). The inspection reports these two weaknesses with numerical data (lock delay, stop time, ΔT) and foresees taking the machine out of service for critical findings. Facilities are recommended a five-minute operator observation list per shift, mandatory interlock testing after repair, and an annual thermography (panel/motor) addition. Bypassed light curtain or safety lock, dead emergency stop, removed guard, broken two-hand spacing, slipping brake, failed RCD, broken earth continuity or disabled pressure safety: red tag and no use. These are known causes of limb-cut and crushing accidents; protection bypassed under production pressure is reported as an unacceptable finding and the machine stays stopped until removed.

Daily operator check (guard-stop-curtain-leak-sound), monthly logged safety function test, yearly engineer control and the manufacturer maintenance calendar (lubrication-brake-pad-hydraulic seals) are nested. Training: an authority list and operator sign-off per machine; lockout-tagout maintenance is mandatory.
