Periodic inspection of road reclaimers: cutting rotor, mixing hood interlock, depth controls and drivetrain-brake checks with signed reports.
Road reclaimer stabilizer machine periodic inspection is the at-least-annual examination by authorised engineers of self-propelled and towed machines that remove and crush the existing asphalt-subbase in place mixing it with the foundation or stabilising soil: the cutting rotor drum and teeth, mixing chamber hood, depth-progress control and brakes, travel-drivetrain and operator protection-vision gear are examined. Because these machines break hard material with high energy, they are the group where thrown-part and rotor-entrapment risks peak.
Inspection Items
- Cutting rotor (drum): Pick wear-breakage counting and holder-stud torque control; rotor housing-rail wear and crank clearance; lift-lower chain-gear-belt organ and brake behaviour; holding in parked position (drift test).
- Mixing hood and haulage: Wear plates in the mixing chamber, rear discharge door-lock; verification of the interlock preventing rotor start with the hood open (hood safety switch); material scatter curtain integrity.
- Depth-drive control: Depth automation sensors and hydraulic matching; track-wheel travel brakes, rollback test on gradient; differential lock; steering and hydrostatic drive behaviour; emergency stop chain.
- Protection-vision: ROPS/FOPS and mixing compartment shield-curtain; rear camera-sensor, beacon-horn; work lighting and dust-water suppression (noise-dust exposure).
- Engine-chassis: Overspeed cut-off, exhaust-filter-smoke, fire suppression; chassis pin-bushing, rod-end; electric insulation-earthing (TS EN 60204-1); thermal scan (drive-gearbox-brake).
Periodic Tests and Measurements
Testing begins in the rotor zone with the engine off and locked (LOTO): missing-broken tooth counting, stud tightness by caliper-torque; rotor clearance measured by rotation distance. The rotor lift test tries drift and valve-failure scenario; availability of the mechanical park lock is verified. The mixing hood interlock is tested by confirming the rotor cannot start when the hood opens — the single greatest preventer of fatal entrapment. Depth automation deviation is measured against a grade reference. The drive-brake test takes loaded stopping distance, gradient holding and steering play; thermography scans rotor-gearbox hot spots. Suppression flow and noise are compared with occupational exposure limits (OEL).
Legislation and Standards
As self-propelled work equipment, reclaimer stabilizers are subject to at least annual periodic control under Law No. 6331, the Work Equipment Regulation and the 2006/42/EC Machinery Directive. Technical references: general safety TS EN 474-1 with soil stabiliser-excavator type part, rollover protection ISO 3471, visibility ISO 5006, fluid power ISO 4413 and the vibration-noise exposure directives. On the road side, traffic safety planning (WORKSAFETY approach: cones-barriers-slowdown) is evaluated with municipal-highway rules and silica-noise OEL legislation.
Risks, Recommendations and Outcome
Fatal failure models are arm-leg entrapment reaching the rotor through an open mixing hood and thrown teeth; disabling the hood interlock is the common link — bypass is strictly prohibited. Second, rollback on sloped strata and material scatter during haulage injure persons outside the operator; shield-curtain and barrier-worker separation in the working cross-section are mandatory. Facilities are recommended daily hood-interlock trials (engine-off simulation), weekly tooth-stud scan, monthly brake-depth control and LOTO rotor change. Rotor picks are replaced in manufacturer sets (partial change breeds vibration-fatigue). At the end of the examination a signed report is issued.
