Scrapers
Periodic inspection of motor scrapers: blade hydraulics, bowl-ejector gear, drawbar connections and ROPS checks with signed engineer reports.
Scraper periodic inspection is the at-least-annual examination by authorised engineers of towed and motor scrapers used in thin cut-haul-fill work: cutting edge with adjustment cylinders, bowl floor integrity, push-pull chassis connections, ejector organs, travel-brake and operator protection are examined. The scraper is efficient over long earthmoving distances yet high in brake load and dust exposure; controls take shape around these two focuses.
Inspection Items
- Blade and cutting organ: Edge wear and bolted wear plates; leak-sag in depth control cylinders; control lock and movable pin-bushing clearance during raising-lowering.
- Bowl and ejector: Floor wear-hole traces, side-rear buckling; ejector chain-belt-hydraulic organ; torsion on the chassis from load distribution at dump.
- Pull-chassis (towed): Drawbar with the pushing tractor, pivot-bushing wear, integrity of hydraulic-electric-air line passes; brake-signal dialogue (tractor-trailer).
- Travel-brake (motor): Final drive-brake linings, park holding, differential-suspension; steering-hydraulic boost play; rollback test on gradient.
- Cab-protection-vision: ROPS/FOPS connection-repair control, rear camera-mirror, beacon, dust suppression (water tank-spray) and extinguisher.
Periodic Tests and Measurements
In the depth adjustment test, cylinder drift behaviour and control reaction time are measured during the lift-lower cycle. Ejector chain-belt tension and dump evenness are observed: a skipping chain piles material in the bowl and bends the chassis. On the pull connection, drawbar-pin clearance is caliper checked and bolts torque verified; a worn pivot causes trailer wobble and brake imbalance. On the motor scraper, loaded stopping distance is measured; retarder-exhaust brake behaviour with drum temperatures are scanned thermally. Spray flow is tried for dust suppression; cabin glass surface and lamps are evaluated for night conditions.
Legislation and Standards
Scrapers are subject to at least annual periodic control under Law No. 6331, the Work Equipment Regulation and Machinery Directive duties. Technical references: general safety of self-propelled machines TS EN 474-1 and the motor scraper part TS EN 474-6, on the towed side the brake-signal connections and trailer rules (ECE R13 approach), visibility ISO 5006 and fluid power ISO 4413. Dust-silica control is evaluated with the OEL Regulation and health-safety plan clauses for construction works.
Risks, Recommendations and Outcome
Typical accidents: forcing a jammed ejector over the chassis (hand-arm crush), rollback tipping on gradient without brakes and lining fade on long descents. Therefore on ejector faults the machine must be stopped, isolated and then worked; slope procedure and ramp-side direction must be fixed in training. Loss of brake-signal dialogue on the towed type (cable-air line damage) disables the trailer brake; a shift connection test is recommended. Facilities are advised monthly drawbar-pivot audit, brake-retarder service band, water system descaling and a dust measurement programme. At the end of the examination a signed report is issued. A scraper is a towed or self-propelled machine that digs-scrapes soil with a cutting edge, carries it in a bowl and ejects it. Risks: control loss-hopping when digging in, boom-draft hydraulic leak-freeze-drop, uncontrolled tailgate opening on eject, tyre-rim overload-overheat, pusher reverse strike and brake fade-cooling on heavy load. No-leaking burst valve on bowl-elevation-tailgate (sudden drop-open), broken-heavily worn throwing cutting edge, loose-cracked draftline-drawbar bolt (parting), insufficient brake cooling-heavy descent fade, parking brake not holding, cracked-over-pressure tyre-rim (burst), excessive hydraulic pressure-clogged filter, dead lighting-signal-rear alarm: red tag. Return after repair verification; the tailgate drop-prevention (mechanical prop) is an operating rule; over-capacity compliance. Records in the OHS file.
