Periodic inspection of concrete pumps: boom-line pressure, blockage safety, outriggers-brakes and hose-end checks by engineers, with signed reports.
Concrete pump periodic inspection is the at-least-annual examination and testing by authorised engineers of truck-mounted boom pumps and stationary pumps conveying fresh concrete through pipeline and boom: the hydraulic pumping organ (piston-valve group), the carrier boom-pipeline and end hose, blockage-burst protection, vehicle brake-chassis-outrigger gear and the operator-remote control systems are assessed. Concrete pump accidents are characterised by pipeline rupture under blockage pressure, tipping and crush — among the highest-energy failure scenarios in the sector.
Inspection Items
- Pumping organ: Main pistons, material cylinders, S-valve/K-valve wear and leakage; pump pressure verified against max working value; sump oil and cooling; accumulator behaviour — the accumulator's protection role during pressure spikes at blockage is critical.
- Boom and line: Wear thickness measurement on boom pipes (especially elbow-end zones); boom joint-weld-pin-bushing and cylinder leaks; end rubber hose wear-cracking; line cleaning (pigging) procedure and pressure gauge.
- Blockage-burst safety: Line safety valves and end hose safety device; boom carrier-probe position lock; the existence and practice of a decompression procedure before line disassembly.
- Vehicle and chassis: Outriggers full extension-lock, ground pads; transport lock carrying the boom on tip; chassis torsion, brake-park, road transit conformity; upper connection (turntable) bolts.
- Control-safety: Wireless remote stop button, boom axis limits, alarm; operator vision and signaller (rigger) organisation; TS EN 60204-1 insulation-earthing; fire extinguishing.
Periodic Tests and Measurements
Line pressure and blockage testing start with a safe idle cycle: pumping sequence pressure reading, S-valve leak measurement and accumulator pre-charge control. The boom function test covers axis limits and lock dialogue; transport sway and drift are measured. UT thickness measurement runs at elbow-front and end points — concrete abrasion is the first cause of line burst; pipe below the manufacturer minimum thickness is replaced immediately. The outrigger test tries full deployment, drift under load and locking on pressure loss. The final item is line cleaning safety: decompression valve and hose protection before disassembly; the sponge ball procedure must be in the work instruction.
Legislation and Standards
Concrete pumps are subject to at least annual control under Law No. 6331 and the Work Equipment Regulation, the vehicle side by highway rules and the 2006/42/EC Machinery Directive; the pressure line links to pressure equipment rules (PED/declaration of conformity). Technical references: machine safety for pumps TS EN 12001 and TS EN 12002 (concrete pumping equipment), carrier vehicle rules (braking-lighting ECE), superstructure connection ISO approaches and fluid power ISO 4413. Risks, Recommendations and Outcome
Fatal scenarios: pressurised pipe-coupling release during blockage disassembly (eye-chest trauma), uncontrolled concrete burst from line failure and being caught under the boom. Line disassembly always with pressure relief; personnel stay outside the hose-line effect zone. A worn pipe-hose replacement programme with measurement intervals is essential. Outriggers set on firm ground fully deployed with control tape and signaller organisation. Facilities are recommended a daily line-pressure-safety valve checklist, monthly outrigger test and periodic boom UT measurement. At the end of the examination a signed report is issued. A concrete pump (trailer, boom-mounted, static) presses concrete into the line at high-bar pressure with piston-hydraulic cylinders; the boom-end hose-conveyor is the transport member. Risks: high-pressure hose-pipe burst-parting (projectile-concrete jet), blockage-pressure build-up (burst-pipe break), boom hydraulic-drop-elevation-leak (tip-over arm), pump-hopper-mixer entrapment and chassis-outrigger-stability during pumping.
