Periodic inspection of rollers and compactors: vibration organ, park brake, drum-pads and ROPS shield checks by authorised engineers with signed reports.
Soil compaction machine periodic inspection is the at-least-annual examination and testing by authorised engineers of vibratory and soil rollers, padfoot rollers, plate compactors (rammers, walk-behind plates) and asphalt finisher rollers: the vibration eccentric organ, brake-park-gear neutral lock, travel-drive gear, operator protection shield and hydraulic-electric safety chain are assessed. Despite compact sizes these machines form a major OHS chapter through vibration-driven musculoskeletal exposure and tip-crush accidents.
Inspection Items
- Vibration organ: Eccentric weight bearings, drum connection bolts and crack scan; verification of frequency-amplitude settings within the manufacturer band; vibration motor-suspension isolator integrity. Worn bearings breed fatigue cracks that can end in drum detachment.
- Brake and park: Service-park-emergency performance; gear lever neutral start lock, reversing alarm; slope holding in hillside work (grade class matched to manufacturer data).
- Travel and drum-pads: Drum surface wear-pitting-buckling, padfoot tip wear; hydrostatic drive-clearance-noise; steering and oscillation lock (transport lock) behaviour.
- Protection and shield: Operator shield (tip-over protection), crush guard above the drum; on walk-behind compactors handle safety and rollback brake; water tank and dust suppression.
- Engine-electrical: Overspeed cut-off, battery-charging, insulation-earthing (TS EN 60204-1); work lamps and reflective marking; noise level.
Periodic Tests and Measurements
Drum connection and eccentric examination run with vibration off and locked (LOTO); when vibration runs, drum sway, bearing sound and frequency (vibration analysis) are stored as a comparative trend. Brake tests cover loaded stopping distance, gradient holding and park brake; the transport lock is verified with engage-disengage behaviour. On lift-equipped rollers, boom-cylinder drift and valve-failure tests are run. On walk-behind units, the drive clutch release brake is tested by releasing the handle. Noise and hand-arm vibration exposure are compared with OEL limits; above-limit vibration enters the report as a repair/replace recommendation.
Legislation and Standards
As self-propelled work equipment, compaction machines are subject to at least annual control under Law No. 6331, the Work Equipment Regulation and the 2006/42/EC Machinery Directive. Technical references: general safety TS EN 474-1 and the roller/compactor type part TS EN 474-10, rollover ISO 3471, visibility ISO 5006, hand-arm vibration 2002/44/EC (with its national transposition) and noise exposure 2003/10/EC. On site, crush prevention means pedestrian-machine separation and reverse-vision rules in the safety plan.
Risks, Recommendations and Outcome
Frequent accidents: a rolling-back machine pinning the operator against a wall or element, drum-frame entrapment and tipping on edge work. Park brake-neutral lock and slope limit training are therefore mandatory; a mechanical block must be used in drum service. On walk-behind units, arm-leg protection and non-slip decks are audited. Facilities are recommended daily brake-shield tests, monthly eccentric-bearing listening, a vibration-noise measurement programme and a glove-ear defender policy.
