Welding Machines

Periodic inspection of welding machines: insulation-earthing, cables-joints, gas leakage, fire prevention and fume extraction checks, with signed reports.

Welding machine periodic inspection is the at-least-annual audit by authorised engineers of arc (MMA/MIG-MAG/TIG), resistance (seam-spot) and gas welding equipment: electrical insulation-earthing, cable-joint and hose integrity, overheating-gas leakage, fire prevention and welding fume extraction are examined. Welding is a high-risk process combining electric shock, fire-explosion, UV radiation and fume exposure.

Critical Safety Organs

  • Electrical safety: Machine body earthing, insulation resistance and RCD; open-circuit voltage limiting (OCVT) and VRD function; electrode holder-work clamp insulation (TS EN 60974-1).
  • Cables and connections: Welding cable damage-splice scan, joint tightness and overheating trace (thermography); secondary circuit cross-section-capacity match.
  • Gas system (MIG/TIG/oxy-acetylene): Cylinder-valve-cap integrity, flashback arrestor and non-return valves, hose-clamp and leak test; upright cylinder securing.
  • Fire and spark: Spark-curtain screens, area cleared of combustibles (safe distance), extinguisher access and periodic spark-scatter control.
  • Fume and eye-skin: Extraction arm (LEV) flow and filter status; welding screen-filter glass (UV/IR protection), auto-darkening hood; occupational exposure control.

Periodic Tests and Measurements

  • Insulation and earthing: Primary-secondary insulation resistance, body-earth continuity (milliohm), RCD tripping time; TS EN 60974-1 acceptance limits.
  • Open voltage test: Function verification of OCVT and VRD; safe voltage measurement at electrode holder contact.
  • Hose-leak: Gas line pressure-drop and foam/sensor leak test; flashback arrestor and check valve function.
  • Thermal scan: Hot-spot detection on cable-joints and panel by thermal camera.
  • Emission: Fume extraction flow measurement, filter pressure drop; air quality in confined spaces.

Legislation and Standards

Welding equipment is subject to at least annual control under Law No. 6331, the Work Equipment Regulation and the hot work rules of the Regulation on Protection Against Fire in Buildings. Technical references: arc welding power sources TS EN 60974-1, gas equipment TS EN ISO 2503 and cylinder safety TS EN ISO 11114/11117, resistance welding the TS EN ISO 11773 family, and fume extraction with the relevant ventilation standards plus pressure vessel legislation on the gas side.

Risks, Recommendations and Outcome

The heaviest incidents are electric shock from defective insulation or inadequate earthing, hose burst in oxy-acetylene with a missing flashback arrestor, and fire from sparks landing on combustibles. Welding in tanks and silos needs a separate permit procedure. Facilities are recommended hot work permits, periodic cable-joint thermography, gas line leak testing and a LEV filter change calendar. At the end of the examination a signed report with findings and measurements is issued. Welding generates arc heat with hundreds of amperes, uses shielding and pressure gases such as argon, CO2, oxygen-acetylene, and creates dense UV, hot metal and fume. The audit gathers on four axes: electric shock (open circuit voltage, earthing, insulation, RCD), fire (spark splash, distance to combustibles, screens), gas train integrity (hose, regulator, flashback arrestor, gauges) and health (fume extraction, ventilation, mask-eye-skin protection).

Machine insulation, earth-bonding continuity and RCD are measured; open-circuit and arc load voltage are checked. Cable insulation damage and joints are scanned thermally. The gas line gets a leak test; flashback arrestors and check valves are verified present and working; upright cylinder restraint and cylinder test-date records are checked. Fume extraction-filter-fan performance, auto-darkening mask function, combustible clearance and extinguisher access are audited; the hot work permit and post-work fire watch record are reviewed.

Broken earthing-bonding, a melted-damaged cable (open to shock), a failed RCD, gas leak, torn hose, faulty regulator or missing flashback arrestor (flame return-explosion risk), a lying unchained cylinder or an expired test date, dead fume extraction in a confined space, combustibles in the spark zone or an insufficient extinguisher: work stops under red tag. After repair verification, the cylinder close-valve routine and fire watch are enforced through logged training.

The work sits within Law No. 6331, fire safety legislation and the Work Equipment Regulation (periodic examination and stamp calendar for cylinders and pressure gear); electrical machine control is usually yearly. Hot work zones need screen isolation and cleaning plus a written post-work fire watch. Training: welder qualification certificate, gas safety, confined space procedure and PPE (auto-dark mask, leather apron, helmet, closed shoes). Records — report, gas log, permit, certificate and stamp — gather in the OHS file and are shown in insurance and fire audits.
