Periodic inspection of drilling machines: workpiece clamping, spindle guard, feed limit, speed matching and electrical checks by engineers with signed reports.
Drilling machine periodic inspection is the at-least-annual testing by authorised engineers of bench, radial and pillar drill machines during hole making with a rotating bit: workpiece clamping, spindle and bit guard, feed organ, speed-tool compatibility and the electrical-safety equipment are examined. Drilling accidents concentrate in throwing the unclamped part via bit rotation and injuring the hand with wound metal ribbon-chip.
Critical Safety Organs
- Workpiece clamping: Vice, jaw-plate and clamp rigidity; part-pull risk on an unclamped piece under the bit; T-slot bolt and block compatibility.
- Spindle-guard: Cover over the rotating spindle-chuck, adjustable shroud, chip splash screen, spindle brake.
- Feed and depth: Automatic precision depth stop, feed lever behaviour; overload on excessive depth/force.
- Speed-tool match: RPM label per bit diameter and material; small-bit breakage at high speed (glove ban near rotating parts).
- Electrical: TS EN 60204-1; emergency stop, door interlock, earthing-insulation-RCD; panel and motor protection.
Periodic Tests and Measurements
- Interlock and stop: Guard sensor function, depth-stop verification, axis limit tests.
- Emergency stop: Spindle coast-down time, feed cut-off behaviour; restart blocking.
- Holding and vibration: Chuck grip force, bit runout measurement; swing and balance of column/radial arms.
- Electrical measurement: Earthing continuity, insulation resistance, RCD tripping time; festoon cable damage and thermography.
- Occupational health: Noise, chip direction, lighting lux; steel-toe shoe, goggles-face shield; ban on catching metal ribbon by hand (use cloth-brush).
Legislation and Standards
Drilling machines are subject to at least annual periodic control under Law No. 6331 and the Work Equipment Regulation. Risks, Recommendations and Outcome
The frequent accidents are drilling a hand-held or loosely clamped part — the piece spins and cuts or is thrown. Necktie, sleeve or hair near the rotating spindle must be banned; long spiral chips winding around the work cut the hand. Facilities are recommended vice-clamping always, brush-chip cleaning, tool-matched speed label, closed spindle cap and bit sharpening/replacement at wear. FAQ on Drill Machine Inspection
Accidents largely come from three practical errors: a loose glove, sleeve or hair entangled and pulled by the rotating spindle; an unclamped or loose workpiece spinning with the bit and being thrown; and a chuck key left in the socket or a damaged bit breaking. Control therefore runs the chuck and key discipline, spindle cap guarding, workpiece clamping, brake and keyed start together with the electrical safety triangle.
Condition of the chuck and chuck key, bit centrifugal runout, spindle cap and curtain function, feed lever depth stop, the closed position of the stepped pulley cover (preventing hand-belt contact), vice and table T-slot bolt tightness, table swivel lock, keyed start-lock and mushroom emergency stop, insulation-earthing-bonding-RCD measurement, belt cover and tension, capacity label and CE-document-manual integrity. Chip splash direction and work lighting are field observation notes.
Missing key warning (projectile risk), excessive bit runout (breakage), bypassed cap interlock, open pulley cover, loose vice or unlocked table (ejection), absent start-lock or dead emergency stop, faulty insulation-earthing-RCD or a removed belt cover: the machine is tagged and stopped. It returns after repair and test verification; the clamping rule and the no-glove discipline are followed through logged training.
Daily: key tightness, closed guard, table-vice sight and a stop trial. Weekly: belt tension-cover check and spindle-feed rail lubrication. Monthly: interlock lock-out test log. Yearly: engineer examination with electrical measurement plus mechanical runout-vibration. Training covers clamping, bit grip, chip direction, fitted-sleeve and no-glove rules, measuring while stopped and the stop-lock-report emergency protocol.
