Portable Fire Extinguishers Inspection

Periodic inspection of portable fire extinguishers is the authorised service covering dry powder, foam, CO₂ and extinguishing ball units kept as first-response tools in workplaces: a general examination at least once a year under the Regulation on Protection Against Fire in Buildings, recharging where required, and the hydrostatic test of the shell every five years. If the extinguisher is available with the correct agent and pressure in the first 30 seconds, it saves lives; a dropped-pressure or wrong-type unit makes intervention impossible.

Scope of Control and Service

  • Annual examination: External corrosion-dents, gauge reading in the green band, safety pin-seal integrity of hose-lance and gaskets, and filling weight.
  • Recharge and service: Units found out of pressure or powder condition are opened for drying, powder change, gas charging and a renewed tightness test.
  • Hydrostatic test: Every five years, the shell is water-pressure tested at the value foreseen by the standard; passed cylinders are stamped and re-planned, rejected ones destroyed.
  • On CO₂ types: Fill weight control; a drop in weighing result requires early intervention.

Correct Selection and Placement

The inspection report produces not only maintenance but also suitability control: extinguisher count and capacity per square metre, access distance and mounting height are regulation rules by hazard class. If the right type is not matched to Class A solids, Class B liquids, Class C gases, electrical panels (CO₂/dry powder) or Class F kitchen fats, the intervention either stays ineffective or grows the fire. In rack, boiler house and plant room points, type and count are proposed by mapping against the hazard plan during the inspection.

Legislation and Standards

Portable extinguishers must be checked at least once a year under the Regulation on Protection Against Fire in Buildings, Law No. 6331 and work equipment duties. Technical reference: TS EN 3-7 (portable extinguishers; design, performance, conformity), maintenance approaches of the relevant ISO standard and the manufacturer instruction. The hydrostatic test period is clearly defined as 5 years in the regulation. The service label and last test date on the body are the first fields checked during audits.

Risks and Operator Recommendations

Four errors dominate the field: extinguishers left in the red zone, units with removed pins or broken seals, shells corroded under sun or wet exposure and wrong-type pairing (foam unit at a power panel). At filling stations, labelling discipline (serial, date, test due) is essential; lost serials cannot be tracked. A quick shift check (in place? pin intact? gauge green?) must enter the checklist, and personnel training on aim-and-sweep plus evacuation decisions must be combined with periodic drills.

A three-layer regime runs: user monthly visual (gauge-ageing-hose-plate-access), authorised service annual maintenance (external-internal examination, hardware, recharge-top-up) and a five-yearly hydrostatic proof with refilling. The extinguisher type (foam-powder-CO2-water) sets the period and test value; the Fire Buildings Regulation and the extinguisher legislation (TSE-EN 3) form the frame.

Per standard practice the cylinder shell gets a hydrostatic proof every five years (with water pressure, at the test pressure on the type label for example in powder types); the proof verifies shell thickness-corrosion thinning-permeability and crack integrity. A failed or life-expired shell is destroyed: a pressure vessel with burst risk is not recharged. The proof stamp-date and serial number are visible on the body label.

Gauge pressure-fill level (weighing for CO2 and gas types), hose-nozzle-safety pin-seal state, powder-agent flowability-caking control (emptying-element change when needed), bracket-mount and impact-corrosion shell examination, plate readability (type-class-use), fill-performance (type-approved capacity) conformity and the last service stamp. Recharge is done by authorised service with type-approved agent.

The first intervention minute decides the fate of a fire: the extinguisher must be at the entrance-confluence, corridor and dangerous focus (paint shop-boiler-kitchen-panel), hung visible-unblocked at plate-rule height (typically 1,5 m), compatible in type-fire class (A-B-C) and the staff must be trained to use it. The control report lists missing-wrong type-insufficient count-unlabelled-inaccessible findings with a floor plan and suggests a removal calendar.
