Periodic inspection of construction machinery is the at-least-annual audit by authorised engineers of mobile earthmoving machines — excavators, loaders, dozers, graders, rollers, motor graders, backhoe loaders, trenchers and the like — operating in construction, infrastructure, mining and agriculture sites: brake and maintenance organs, hydraulic-lifting equipment, rollover-falling object protection (ROPS/FOPS), noise-lighting-warning devices and electric-communication systems are examined under the Work Equipment Regulation and machinery specific rules. Including the non-lifting types, these are the highest-energy moving equipment in the field and their accidents are predominantly fatal crush-overturn events.

Practical On-Site: Preparation Before Control
For an efficient fleet control, the machine inventory (type, brand-model, serial, hours), previous year reports if any and accident-fault records should be shared in advance; the inspection then focuses risk-based rather than random scanning. On control day machines must be clean, with full fuel tank, bucket lowered to ground and park brake applied. Hydraulic level and leak evaluation notes the cold-hot transition of the machine. The operator's daily checklist (oil, water, lights, tyre-track, hose) is paired with the control data; repeating operator findings are the earliest warning of training and maintenance needs.
Legislation, Process and Outcome
Periodic control relies on Law No. 6331 with the annexes of the Work Equipment Regulation for lifting-work machines (at least annually unless otherwise stated) and the CE/declaration of conformity of the machines. After inspection the machine is graded compliant / non-compliant / hazardous to life and property; a hazardous machine is withdrawn from the operating area. Periodic control runs at most yearly under the Work Equipment Regulation and Law No. 6331; heavy site condition (dust-mud-terrain), high duty cycle and heavy lifting (rope-hook-anchor) shorten the period. Where the machine has a lifting member (winch, boom, bucket rope), a yearly load-function test is required; on tipper-lift groups a drop-prevention (burst valve) control is mandatory.
