Shaping Machine

Periodic inspection of shapers and planers: tool guard, table travel limits, emergency stop, guarding and electrical checks. Engineer-signed reports.

Shaping machine periodic inspection is the at-least-annual audit of planing machines (and their smaller variant, the shaper) where the workpiece travels linearly on the table while the cutter removes stock: guarding and locking of the reciprocating table and tool, the speed-limit organs and the electric-safety chain are examined. The risk on these tools is the crushing between two reciprocating members and contact with the cutting edge.

Critical Safety Organs

  • Tool and cutter guard: Adjustable cover over the cutter; soundness of the clapper box lifting on the return stroke and tool-ejection prevention.
  • Table travel limits: Adjustable stoppers preventing workpiece overrun, end position switches and buffers; table reversing lock.
  • Speed and motion control: Stroke-rate limiting; covers over the ram-crank mechanism (TS EN ISO 14120 guarding).
  • Workpiece holding: Vice and T-slot bolt rigidity; throw-off risk of unbalanced parts under table acceleration; jaw and block wear.
  • Lubrication-cleaning: Way and leadscrew lubrication, jamming risk from chip build-up, splash screen when coolant is used.

Periodic Tests and Measurements

  • Emergency stop chain: Cut-off time of table and tool motion; no table sag on power loss; restart blocking.
  • Interlock and guard: Function of cover sensors, defeat-mark search, delay measurement (TS EN ISO 14119).
  • Electrical: Earthing continuity, insulation resistance and RCD under TS EN 60204-1; panel-cable scan, motor protection.
  • Mechanical: Crank-gearbox, belt tension, table lead screw clearance; abnormal noise-vibration scan; brake lining.
  • Occupational health: Noise, chip direction, lighting; tool change procedure and glove-sleeve rules enforcement.

Legislation and Standards

Shapers and planers are subject to at least annual periodic control under Law No. 6331 and the Work Equipment Regulation; if CE-marked, the 2006/42/EC Machinery Directive duties also apply. Risks, Recommendations and Outcome

Common field errors are defeating the clapper box so the cutter does not lift on return, and leaving the table stopper unadjusted — both yield broken tools and thrown parts. Facilities are recommended clamping-stopper check before each job, runout measurement after tool change and never clearing chips while running. At the end of the examination a signed report with the findings table is issued. On a shaper the cutter (ram) runs a linear forward-return stroke; on the return it drags without cutting, and the forward press cuts, creating a hand-arm crossing-cut hazard under the ram. The clapper box and the table clamping zone are shear-pinch points. Protection focuses on a physical barrier over the ram path, mushroom emergency stop, and the blade cover-feed mechanism safety.

Faulty clapper spring (drag-crash on return), bypassed stroke limit (ram over-travel mechanical crash), loose tool-post slipping blade or under-feed, excessive ram crank-bearing play-vibration-heat, loose table slot-bolt clamp (ejection risk), bypassed cover interlock, dead emergency stop, leakage-faulty RCD-earth: red tag. Return after repair verification (limit time, grip-close trial). The no-hand-crossing-under-ram rule and the tool change with LOTO stop are enforced.

Daily: guard, clear ram path, visible clamp check, brake-mushroom trial; weekly: tool post torque, clapper spring and crank lubrication; monthly: limit switch collision protection test log; yearly: engineer examination (TS EN 60204-1 electrical plus mechanical runout-play). Training: lock-out during cutter change, blade grip, chip-direction gloves-sleeves. Records (report-measurement log-training) enter the OHS file; the machine capacity stroke-label stays visible and chip guard cleaning is routine.
