Loaders
Periodic inspection of wheel loaders: boom cylinders-hoses, bucket linkage, brakes, ROPS and rear vision-sensor gear checked by engineers with signed reports.
Loader periodic inspection is the at-least-annual testing by authorised engineers of wheeled front-end loaders: lifting-dumping organs, hydraulic and brake systems, the operator protection structure and the vision-warning equipment are examined under the Work Equipment Regulation. Loaders need control because of the tipping margin created by fill height and load centre, plus the manoeuvres in confined spaces like pallets and pits; travelling raised, brake lining wear and reversing accidents are the typical scenarios.
Inspection Items
- Lift-dump mechanism: Pin-bushing clearance and crack scan of lift arms, function test of the locking bucket coupler (quick coupler) with mechanical indicator verification; leak control on boom cylinders and hose rotation swivels.
- Travel and brake: Tyre tread-pressure, rim-bolt integrity; service-park-emergency brake performance, oil-immersed lining wear; transmission gear behaviour and torque converter.
- ROPS/FOPS and cabin: Torque control of guard cage bolts, glass-door soundness, seatbelt sensor; cabin pressure-filter (dusty sites).
- Hydraulics and load sensing: Overload alarm, lift limit cut-off valves, speed-controlled dumping; pump pressure and oil temperature trend; burst valve verification.
- Vision-warning: Rear camera-sensor and radar, beacon-horn, mirrors; blind spot analysis; night lighting and reflective markings.
Periodic Tests and Measurements
During a loaded test (full bucket, max lift) the stopping distance while travelling raised is measured; park brake holding is tried on gradient. Cylinder drift testing combines with the lock coupler open-closed transition check for mechanical sound-lock light. Pin-bushing play is measured with calipers against the maintenance band; worn joint clearance produces jerk and spill in boom motion. Brake lining thickness and bath temperature indicate continuous-brake behaviour. Cabin ROPS-FOPS plates and bolts are verified; repaired cages must be replaced with certified parts. Finally thermal scan finds brake-hose-pump hot spots and lighting-signal functions are tested.
Legislation and Standards
Loaders are subject to at least annual periodic control under Law No. 6331, the Work Equipment Regulation and the 2006/42/EC Machinery Directive. Technical references: general safety TS EN 474-1, loader-specific TS EN 474-4, brake performance rules for wheeled machines ISO 3450, ROPS ISO 3471, visibility ISO 5006, fluid power ISO 4413 and relevant exposure limit legislation. Risks, Recommendations and Outcome
The heaviest incidents are crush under a raised bucket (hydraulic leak or hose burst), tipping (loaded high travel-sharp turn) and reversing run-over. Operator rule: load low, boom locked, clear vision; engine off and boom support block in maintenance at the articulation zone. Facilities are recommended mandatory rear radar, no-overfill policy, brake-cooling rest procedure and periodic ROPS bolt torque. At the end of the examination a signed report with measurements and findings is issued. Cleaning-repair under a boom of a parked, unblocked, un-parked machine is a common fatal pattern.
