Guillotine Shear
Periodic inspection of guillotine shears: blade guarding, back gauge, two-hand control, light curtain and brake safety checks with signed reports.
Guillotine shear periodic inspection is the at-least-annual testing by authorised engineers of hydraulic and mechanical guillotine and power shears used to cut sheet: cutting-edge guarding, back gauge safety organs, the two-hand control and light curtain equipment and the hydraulic-hold brake safety are examined. Shear accidents focus on the operator's hand crushed between blade and beak and on the ejected cut part.
Critical Safety Organs
- Cutting-edge guard: Adjustable cover over the upper blade rail; light curtain / laser monitoring blocking hand access (ESME-type for shears) and safety distance verified per TS EN ISO 13855.
- Back gauge: Automatic gauge pushing the sheet with finger/plate locking; anti-kick-back devices for post-cut recoil; position switches.
- Control: No cut without two hands, simultaneous delay (TS EN 574) and anti-tie-down; on foot pedal, guarding cover and delay lock.
- Hydraulic-brake: Suspension of the upper blade table (hold-down/clamp bar) and fall protection; hydraulic support valves; cylinder leak and relief valve.
- Electrical: Emergency stop, door interlock, safety PLC; TS EN 60204-1 earthing-insulation; thermography; panel-cable damage.
Periodic Tests and Measurements
- Interlock/sensing test: Barrier and laser function via test-rod; detection and stop time measurement; bypass-mark search.
- Cut test: Blade clearance and sharpness (burr) control; part ejection scan; back gauge lock function.
- Emergency stop: Upper table stop and drop test; clamp bar holding; braking distance.
- Electrical measurement: Earthing continuity, insulation resistance, RCD; motor protection and safety circuit (TS EN ISO 13849).
- Occupational health: Noise, cut-edge burr injury, lighting; gloves and anti-cut clothing; stacking safety.
Legislation and Standards
Shearing machines are subject to at least annual periodic control under Law No. 6331 and the Work Equipment Regulation. Technical reference: general safety of metal shears TS EN 880, sensing protection TS EN ISO 13855 / TS EN 999, two-hand controls TS EN 574, functional safety TS EN ISO 13849, guards-interlocks TS EN ISO 14119/14120 and electrics TS EN 60204-1. On CE-marked machines the risk assessment file is requested.
Risks, Recommendations and Outcome
The common non-compliance is switching off the light curtain or removing the gauge for thin-sheet access, directly producing hand-crush. With wrong blade clearance the sheet slides and the cut part ejects after the cut. Facilities are recommended shift test-rod verification of the barrier, sharpness-clearance control, LOTO on blade change and magnetic/automatic part handling. At the end of the examination a signed report is issued. FAQ on Guillotine Shear Inspection
A shear cuts sheet by guillotining between upper and lower blades; the operator hand is inside the blade zone while feeding and withdrawing. The danger is the beam or hold-down falling onto the hand, a bypassed light curtain and an unexpected closing on return. Control therefore builds on the curtain and finger guards covering the blade zone, the hold-down clearance, two-hand simultaneity and the blade drop stop.
The curtain trip-cut test is verified with the right safety distance (approach speed and stop time); upper beam hydraulic drift is measured under load. The hold-down pressure anti-burst valve and drop stop are trialled; two-hand press simultaneity, back gauge collision safety, side rail and cover barriers, double-sided mushroom stops and keyed start are checked. Insulation, earthing, bonding and RCD are measured; blade edge wear, notch and the throw deflector are audited; thickness capacity label, CE manual and maintenance record close the list.
A bypassed or faulty curtain (blade closing with hand in zone), a leaking drift valve dropping the beam, a bypassed-loose hold-down burst valve, lagging two-hand timing, dead or unreachable emergency stop, faulty insulation-earthing-RCD, cracked-notched blade or missing deflector: the machine is red-tagged out. Return after cut-stop-time test verification; curtain bypass authority stays restricted and hand positions are secured by training.
Engineer examination runs yearly under the Work Equipment Regulation; the daily logged curtain trip test and monthly hold-down valve function check build the rhythm. The manufacturer calendar (blade sharpening, clearance and rake setting, hydraulic oil filter, balance valve) runs as interim care, with six-monthly checks on automotive style heavy lines. Training: blade change under LOTO, palm position in two-hand control, leather gloves against sheet edge cuts. Report, test log, maintenance and certificates gather in the OHS file.
