Electric towing tractor periodic inspection is the at-least-annual examination and testing, by authorised engineers, of battery tow tractors used to pull trailers, trains and load carts over ground. The towing-hitch organs, brake and stability systems, electric-battery equipment and operator safety are assessed. Growing in number in production line supply and airport apron operations, this equipment runs under the pulling and slowing load of the train weight.
Structural Difference of the Tow Tractor
Tow tractors do not lift; the critical load sits on the hitch connection and brake balance. Therefore their inspection logic has weight points differing from pallet trucks and forklifts:
- Tow hook / automatic coupling and pin: fatigue and wear control
- Head connection and body chassis; impact buffers
- Trailer load platform (on towlifter types) and chain-belt tensioning system
- Brakes: service, park and automatic brake; trailer brake air/electric line where fitted
- Battery and drive: motor, gearbox, drive wheels
- Visibility-warning equipment: lights, horn, reverse alarm, hood integrity
Periodic Inspection Items
- Towing organ: Hook opening (wear and permanent set measurement), pin and latch clearance, lock integrity; crack search on welded connections.
- Structural: Fatigue traces at chassis torsion zones and head-cabin welds; trailer platform (if any) lift chain and rollers.
- Brake and stability: Loaded stopping distance under pull test, park brake holding, automatic stop; trailer brake synchronisation test where fitted.
- Electrical: Insulation resistance, wear at connectors and cable passes, emergency stop and lamp-signalling functions.
- Battery: Terminal oxidation, BMS/electrolyte maintenance, charging equipment; detection of cell loss causing capacity decline.
- Function: Manoeuvre with connected train, reverse visibility, speed limiter behaviour; brake priority (tractor-trailer) verification.
Legislation and Standards
Electric tow tractors are work equipment subject to periodic control at least once a year under Law No. 6331 and the Work Equipment Regulation. Technical references are TS EN ISO 3691-1 and its powered part (ISO 3691-2); design safety follows the ISO 22915 series. In special sites such as aprons and under-rail areas, local facility rules and train weight limits are considered in the inspection. Trailer brake synchronisation is a parameter the towing chain legislation treats as critical.
Risks and Operator Recommendations
The focus of tow tractor incidents is trailer strike and crush, plus trailer brake delay: the trailer pushing forward while the tractor stops can crush personnel in the coupling zone — the synchronisation test is mandatory for this reason. Permanent hook opening growth or pin clearance marks a pull-apart failure mode; results must be trended. Excessive train weight moves the stopping distance beyond design; the operator training must build the habit of reading the capacity table. The blind spot bans reversing without a spotter; camera/sensor fitting is recommended. Charging station and battery water management must follow the same hygiene-safety rules as other battery equipment.

The battery tow tractor is a self-propelled work machine pulling pallet-trailer trains for internal logistics. It has no lifting gear, yet the total mass of the train it pulls (trailer plus load) sets the limits of brakes, running gear and stability: runaway on ramps, turning-cam-cut, train sway-skid and the battery-weight centre are the critical variables. The control runs yearly under the Work Equipment Regulation, the manufacturer manual and TS EN ISO 3691 practice.
Travel motor-gearbox-axle-bushings, wheel-rim-cam with kingpin play; brake system (electro-mechanical, wet or dry) braking distance-ramp hold plus hand (park) brake function; control: throttle-brake-forward-reverse-neutral, lock-automatic stop, audible-visual warnings (horn, blue light, reverse alarm); battery-terminal-water-charging-leak-insulation-earth/RCD protection; coupling hardware: drawbar-fifth wheel-pin-safety lock, trailer brake-hydraulic-electrical links; capacity-loading-balance label readability.
Long braking distance or one-sided pull, hand brake not holding (ramp runaway), worn-lost drawbar pin safety lock (trailer separation risk), leakage-insulation fault-battery swelling, wheel-cam wear disturbing train stability, failed audible-visual warning and missing capacity label. A red tag applies and the unit leaves the user; it returns after repair-verification. Findings at the coupling point are handled from both sides — the trailer must also be inspected.
Pre-shift check: brakes (short trial empty and loaded), audible-visual warning, drawbar pin lock, battery gauge-charging-insulation, wheel-pin sight. Ramp-descend-climb rules and speed limits stay in the instruction; trailer count-weight budget is set by the tractor capacity curve. The yearly engineer control is coordinated with the manufacturer service plan (brake pads, gear oil, battery care); all forms and reports live in the OHS file for audits.
