Mechanical, Hydraulic and Pneumatic Press Inspection

Periodic inspection of mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic presses: two-hand controls, light curtains, brake monitoring and safety circuit checks, reported.

Press periodic inspection is the at-least-annual testing by authorised engineers of mechanical (crank), hydraulic and pneumatic presses used to form sheet and metal parts with dies: the control-protection systems that prevent a stroke while the operator's hand is in the die zone, brake and motion-cutting gear, die clamping and overload protection and the electrical control chain are verified. Press accidents rank as the most severe machine group for lost body parts (hand-finger).

Critical Organs by Press Type

  • Mechanical (crank/eccentric) press: Full/part revolution mode verification; brake monitor unit; engage-release valve; balancing device against uncontrolled descent; light curtain or two-hand control in the die zone (EN 692 rules).
  • Hydraulic press: Cylinder leakage and pressure hold (drift) test; pressure limiter and relief valves against overload; support pins/devices for the falling upper platen; closing covers.
  • Pneumatic press: Two-hand distance and timing (simultaneity) control, anti-tie-down circuit verification; no-stroke behaviour on air pressure drop; noise level.

Common Test and Measurement Items

  • Light curtain / protection field: Measurement of detection axis, resolution and safety distance against operator reach (TS EN ISO 13855); override key locked-use status.
  • Two-hand control: Simultaneous delay measurement (≤0.5 s tolerance), anti-repeat verified by holding one button.
  • Emergency stop: Stopping time and the distance in which the brake arrests the stroke; inch/jog mode limitation.
  • Guard and interlock: Motion cut-off on access to the die zone and restart blocking; door rigidity and latch clearance.
  • Electrical: Earthing, insulation and RCD under TS EN 60204-1; panel-cable integrity; motor protection and safety PLC circuit.
  • Mechanical: Flywheel-brake lining condition, clutch adjustment, vibration; on hydraulics, relief valve setting and level control.

Legislation and Standards

Presses are subject to at least annual periodic control under Law No. 6331, the press clauses of the Work Equipment Regulation and the 2006/42/EC Machinery Directive. Technical references: TS EN 692 for mechanical presses, TS EN 12622 for hydraulic/pneumatic cold-forming presses, TS EN ISO 14119/14120 for barriers and interlocks, TS EN 574 for two-hand controls, TS EN 60204-1 for machine electrics and TS EN ISO 12100 as the general principle. The control is made by authorised engineers and the report is kept available for audits.

Risks, Recommendations and Outcome

The most dangerous field practice is silencing or bypassing the light curtain for fast cycling; not enforcing full-revolution mode and a disabled brake monitor produce slip-slide accidents. Traces of these defeats are searched at inspection and written as critical non-compliance when found. LOTO during die change, reduced speed in set-up mode and shift-based test-bar verification of the curtain are recommended to the facility. At the end of the examination a signed report with the brake-control-protection chain measurements is issued. Die-zone guarding, two-hand curtain and brake controls on eccentric and hydraulic presses.

A press closes its stroke fast with high force inside the die area; if the operator hand or body stays in the die zone, crushing-cutting happens within seconds. On mechanical presses the clutch-brake and failure to stop at stroke end, on hydraulic ones leaks, over-pressure and uncontrolled descent are the leading hazards; therefore TS EN 692 (mechanical) and TS EN 12622 (hydraulic) weigh heavily on protection and control.

Light curtain (type 4) trip test and safety distance, two-hand control simultaneity (palm protection), single-stroke mode and die safety block, brake monitor with test valve against falling, emergency mushroom stop time (stopping time monitor), die clamping-bolt state, tension spring break control; mechanically crank-connecting key-rot play and brake pad wear, hydraulically safety valve-cylinder-seal-pressure switches; panel-earthing-RCD measurement.

Under the Work Equipment Regulation periodic control runs yearly (shortened on heavy continuous use); TS EN ISO 12100/TS EN 60204-1 rules and the machine CE risk assessment are the reference. The control includes braking distance and stop time measurement plus the light curtain test record. The operator logs every pre-shift die-stop-curtain check; unauthorised tooling change and protection bypass are forbidden.

Stop time above limit (brake slipping), brake monitor or curtain integration disabled, no single-stroke guard, dead emergency stop, worn-glazed brake lining, cracked die or loose bolts, bypassed hydraulic safety valve: red tag. It returns only after repair and stop-time remeasurement. Die-change training and LOTO (mechanical blocking) procedure are the administrative layer preventing press accidents; records enter the OHS file.
