Ramp
Periodic inspection of loading docks and mobile ramps: structure, hydraulics, wheels and safety gear checked by authorised engineers with signed reports.
Ramp periodic inspection is the examination and testing, at least once a year by authorised engineers, of fixed loading dock levellers, mobile ramps and bridge platforms that connect vehicle and building levels for load transfer. The steel structure, hydraulic lifting organ, wheel-tank pallet gear and safety devices are assessed. As the critical crossing point where forklift traffic meets the truck bed, the collapse and slide scenarios make this equipment subject to statutory periodic control.
Ramp Types and Inspection Scope
Ramps are examined in three main groups by mounting:
- Fixed dock leveller: Pit-mounted hydraulic scissor or mechanical spring bridge with lip and container support (dock lock) system.
- Mobile ramp: Wheeled, towable steel body with walking surface adjusted to truck bed height.
- Swing/adjustable ramps: Hinged single-sided types with chain-handle height adjustment.
Key components in the inspection: main girders and welds, hydraulic cylinder-hose-valve group, wheels and chocks, lip lock mechanism, guardrails and chain barriers, grip-pattern deck plate, anchors and support connections.
Periodic Inspection Items
- Structural examination: Permanent deformation, cracks and torsion on girders and deck; surface crack search on welds; corrosion measurement (a priority on outdoor mobile ramps).
- Hydraulic system: Cylinder leaks, hose ageing, valve integrity; hold (drift) test under load; burst safety valve check.
- Mechanical equipment: Scissor pin wear, spring group tension, lip opening-closing and locking function; tank pallet support movement verification.
- On mobile ramps: Wheel and swivel integrity, brake chock, towing hook and park safety; gear lock of the height adjustment chain-handle.
- Surface and passage: Wear of the anti-slip pattern, vehicle-wheel distance, guardrail and warning paint soundness.
- Load test: Function trial at nominal capacity (usually forklift axle-load based); deflection and noise-vibration evaluation; consistency of the capacity label with manufacturer data.
Legislation and Standards
Loading ramps are subject to periodic control at least annually as work equipment, and on hydraulic types as lifting accessories, under Law No. 6331 and the Work Equipment Regulation. Technical references: TS EN 1398 (dock levellers design and safety), TS EN ISO 4413 for hydraulics and TS EN 1090 for steel structures. On docks and trailer work, forklift transit across the ramp is flagged separately in the report.
Risks and Operator Recommendations
Two scenarios stand at the core of ramp accidents: the truck leaving the dock (creep/movement) leaving the bridge unsupported, and sudden platform descent from hydraulic leakage. Against the first, dock lock / wheel restraint and vehicle warning lights must be treated as mandatory; against the second, burst valves and tank pallet supports. Operators must verify the lip lock sound and support position before entering the truck. On mobile ramps, ground gradient and wheel chocks are two neglected details; the grip pattern becomes vital in frost and icing. Standing loaded (waiting on the ramp) differs from transit load; the procedure must carry a "no parking on ramp" rule.

FAQ on Loading Ramp Inspection
A loading ramp (dock leveller) is a moving steel platform closing the height gap between truck and warehouse floor. During work the truck pulls in-forward, wheels enter the ramp gap, hydraulics hold heavy load and people live under the deck; brakes, hydraulic locking and safety chains are vital control points. Drop-collapse faults are a known cause of fatal accidents. Control runs yearly under the Work Equipment Regulation and TS EN 1398 (loading ramps).
Deck-nose bending-weld-crack-wear; hinge-pin-bushing play and rotation; hydraulic cylinder-hose-pipe leak, lowering valve-pressure hold (measured under load), pump-motor-level; safety hardware: mechanical prop-lock pawl, chain/wire rope, overload-speed limit valves, audible-visual warning-truck control light, vehicle restraint (wheel chock-dock lock) integration; anchoring-concrete-frame integrity, corrosion, seal-door fit; lift-lower-hold function trial at nominal load with capacity label.
Hydraulic not holding-cylinder leak, dead-cracked mechanical lock pawl, permanent deck-nose deformation-weld crack, hinge-pin beyond limit, missing or faulty vehicle restraint, disabled light-truck control system, anchor crack-looseness: tag the ramp and stop use. Return after repair-verification. Daily rule: no entering the deck before the truck is locked-chocked; during maintenance the mechanical prop must be locked against falling.
A daily sight (leaks, alignment, visible lock-pin state) and a monthly function test (lift-lower-hold, warning lamps, lock) feed the yearly control; on high-traffic cold-chain-export warehouses dust-corrosion-humidity cycling accelerates faults, so interim checks are recommended. Dock staff (shipping-security) must be trained on dock-lock light procedure, emergency stop and prop discipline; forms and reports live in the OHS file.
