Cable Excavators
Periodic inspection of cable excavators: hoist-drag ropes, boom-mast structure, brake-valve safety and ROPS checks, with signed reports.
Cable excavator periodic inspection is the at-least-annual examination by authorised engineers of cable-type digging machines — the ancestor of the bucket hydraulic excavator — working with hoist and drag ropes: steel ropes and terminations, drum-brake-valve group, boom-mast structural organs, rollover-falling object protection (ROPS/FOPS) and lifting safety gear are examined. Seen today mostly in draglines, major earthmoving and underwater dredging, this equipment forms a special lifting-work machine class with high elastic rope energy and wide working radius; the inspection logic carries work machine and lifting rope legislation together.
Inspection Items
- Steel ropes: Examination of hoist and drag ropes for broken wires, kinks, rust-pitting, core protrusion and diameter loss against the TS EN 12385-9 acceptance-rejection (discard) criteria; socket-swaged-clamp terminations and drum end attachment integrity; rope lubrication and spooling quality, flange wear.
- Drum-brake-valve: Automatic park brake and controlled lowering valve holding in a failure scenario on each drum; lining wear-adjustment, brake clearance-torque control; drag brake slipping verified with stopping behaviour.
- Boom-mast structural: Crack-wear scan on boom tubes, lattice structure, connection pins-bushings and sheaves; mechanical-hydraulic stops limiting boom angle; permanent deformation measurement under load against reference trend.
- ROPS/FOPS and cabin: Guard cage connection integrity, roof falling-object strength; cabin floor-hole-pedal clearance, window-guard grid, horn-reverse alarm; operator visibility analysis of rope and bucket lines.
- Mechanical-drive: Engine overspeed cut-off, hydraulic pump-relief valves, gearbox clearance-noise-vibration; electrical-insulation-earthing (TS EN 60204-1); fire extinguishing and fuel safety gear.
Periodic Tests and Measurements
Rope examination is count-based: a rope exceeding the broken-wire limit per pitch is replaced immediately, and the removed rope's last load-cycle count is tracked by record. The brake-valve test lifts and holds the nominal load (no drift), then tries controlled lowering; under valve failure simulation the rope must not free-fall. The drag test verifies brake behaviour under limited tension with the bucket locked-empty. Boom angle limits are measured; mast plumb and chassis level are compared (gauge and spirit level). Thermography finds brake-drum-pump hot spots; noise-vibration measurement trends gear-bearing failure precursors. The load chart is legible inside the cab and overload cut-off, where fitted, is calibrated with a trial load.
Legislation and Standards
Carrying lifting ropes, cable excavators are governed by Law No. 6331, both the self-propelled and lifting accessory (rope-hook-sheave) clauses of the Work Equipment Regulation and the 2006/42/EC Machinery Directive; periodic control is at least annual. References: steel ropes TS EN 12385 series, lifting machine design TS EN 13001 (applied organs), mobile crane LMI ISO 11591, rollover ISO 3471/ISO 10269, visibility ISO 5006, fluid power ISO 4413, excavator side general safety TS EN 474-1/2. Underwater dredging versions are additionally bound by marine health and ship equipment rules.
Risks, Recommendations and Outcome
The heaviest models are rope whipping recoil crushing operator and crew, rope override on the drum ending in attachment failure and boom buckling under drag load. Therefore rope cycle counting, proper spooling-follower drum, brake-valve function test and periodic NDT of terminations are essential; discarded ropes are destroyed and recorded. The working radius and bucket line are barrier-separated from personnel. Facilities are recommended monthly rope-brake-mast audit, annual authorised control and an oil-hazard analysis programme. At the end of the examination a signed report is issued. Controls are in our Construction Machinery group; see Hydraulic Excavators and Drilling Rigs, or contact us for a programme.
FAQ on Cable Excavators
A cable excavator moves the boom-bucket through drum-rope-sheave-tension instead of hydraulic cylinders; lift-drop-press members work on rope-brake-grip. This structure brings lifting-machine duties like rope-winding integrity, drum brake hold (load drop), hoist and drag rope-hook-block, and brake balance. TS EN 474 plus lifting gear (rope-brake-load) proofs; yearly control; high overload-tip tendency.
Hoist-drag-boom rope: wire break-corrosion-birdcage-winding discipline-discard limit (ISO 4308/4309), drum-sheave-flange rim crack-winding, brake pad-grip-drop distance-hold (load trial), tension-servo guide, sheave-flange rotation-pin wear, hook-latch-opening, boom draftbar-weld crack-bolt, tower slew-gearbox-brake-lock, travel track tension-idler-brake, ROPS-cabin belt, rear-side view-camera-alarm, lighting-signal-horn, emergency stop, load chart-capacity label, hydraulic level-pressure (slew auxiliary). A load proof where needed. Results are a per-machine finding-levelled report.
Rope beyond discard-wire break-corrosion-birdcage-broken winding (parting-throw), slipping drum brake not holding (load drop), lost-open hook latch, cracked-loose boom draftbar weld-bolt (parting), faulty tower brake-lock (slew runaway), thrown track-loss of control, cracked ROPS-no belt, dead rear alarm-camera, missing load chart: red tag. Return after repair, rope-hook change, verification and load proof. No pedestrian under suspended load-corridor; lift plan with slinger coordination mandatory. Records in the OHS file.
Operator licence (extra competency for cable lift mode); a daily card (rope winding-brake-hook-camera-belt load-load). Tightened rope visual inspection (dust-rock-corrosion) plus a logged discard record; periodic NDE control of boom weld-pin. Underground detection, tip-over risk (slope-crest-bearing-water), suspended load corridor-pedestrian. Maintenance per manufacturer calendar (rope-hook-drum brake pad-tower gearbox). Report-log load test-certificate-fault in the OHS file; yearly control plus lifting gear proofs.
