Goods Lift

Periodic inspection of goods lifts: ropes-chains, cabin and door interlocks, limit switches, brakes and governor checks with signed engineer reports.

Goods lift periodic inspection is the examination and testing, at least annually by authorised engineers, of electric or hydraulic lifts used to move pallets, crates and material between floors. Suspension organs (rope/chain), cabin and door interlocks, limiters, brake and balance systems and drive equipment are assessed. For this load-only equipment, door integrity and rope soundness are the heart of the inspection.

Goods Lift Types and Scope

The scope covers hydraulic cylinder driven goods lifts, traction chain/rope types and small guided lifts. They are common in factory floors, warehouse mezzanines, hotel kitchens and hospital logistics lines. Main components inspected:

  • Cabin, roof and counterweight (if any); guide rails and sliding shoes
  • Rope or chain; drum/sheave and termination heads
  • Drive: electric motor-gearbox or hydraulic pump-cylinder
  • Safety: door-cabin interlock, limit switches, overload limiter, parachute brake (on personnel-rated types), overspeed governor
  • Control line, levelling, alarm and signalling circuits

Periodic Inspection Items

  • Suspension organ: Broken-wire and distortion examination and diameter measurement on rope; wear and elongation control on chain; integrity of termination heads (sockets, clamps).
  • Door and interlock: Functional test of the lock preventing movement until every floor door closes; condition of cabin door glass-bands and loose-hanging check.
  • Limiters: Upper-lower limits, final switches and overload switch; parachute brake and governor (where fitted) tripping tests — at the intervals defined by the standards.
  • Drive: Gearbox oil leakage, brake lining and air gap; on hydraulic type cylinder leakage, valve and burst protection check.
  • Guiding and cabin: Rail clearances, shoe wear, cabin floor-roof and loading flaps; vibration and alignment measurement.
  • Load and function test: Full round trip between floors at nominal capacity; levelling accuracy, emergency stop and door-lock dialogue; consistency of the capacity plate with manufacturer data.

Legislation and Standards

Goods lifts are subject to annual periodic control under Law No. 6331, the Work Equipment Regulation and the 2006/42/EC Machinery Directive. Technical references: TS EN 81-31 (electric lifts for goods only), TS EN 81-20/50 (passenger-goods), TS EN 81-2 for hydraulic lifts, TS EN 12385-9 for rope inspection and TS EN 60204-1 for machine electrics. On types where personnel boarding is prohibited, the door warning plate and interlock are treated as mandatory.

Risks and Operator Recommendations

The leading root cause in goods lift incidents is movement despite a defective door lock: if the cabin travels with the door open, the operator falls into the shaft. Hence the interlock function test is the first item of every control and a broken lock is graded "critical", removing the equipment from service immediately. Rope corrosion develops fast especially in wet environments (kitchens, cold stores); the inspection interval must be shortened there. Overloading (pallet weight beyond the label) consumes brake and rope life; adding a load limit indicator and warning plate to the control panel is recommended. Shaft work during maintenance requires a permit and lockout-tagout (LOTO) procedure in the specification.

Outcome

A goods lift (dumbwaiter-class freight) is not for passengers and follows the TS EN 81-31 (lifts for transport of goods) and Work Equipment Regulation regime; yet door-lock integrity and overload behaviour are as life-critical as in a passenger lift. Used in factory-warehouse-hotel kitchen-hospital laundry lines, these units are managed as lifting machinery in control-maintenance plans; the periodic control runs yearly.

Return only via authorised service repair with test verification. No passengers allowed on goods lifts; instruction and warning plates are checked.

The yearly engineer examination (report, label) and the manufacturer monthly-quarterly maintenance routine (rope, lubrication, door, brake adjustment) are planned nested. Pit water-machine room dust-humidity (laundry, food) raises fault speed; interim checks are recommended on these lines. User training (door lock-no touching, overload, alarm-brake button) and the fault reporting procedure belong to the operator; all reports and cards stay in the OHS file, tied to TS EN 81 series updates.
