Hydraulic Excavators

Periodic inspection of hydraulic excavators: boom-arm cylinders, slew brake, ROPS/FOPS and platform safety checks by authorised engineers with signed reports.

Hydraulic excavator periodic inspection is the at-least-annual audit by authorised engineers of tracked or wheeled hydraulic excavators: boom-arm cylinder-hose organs, slew platform brake, hoist rope (cable type), undercarriage, ROPS/FOPS structure, cabin visibility-warning gear and the electric-hydraulic safety chain are examined under the Work Equipment Regulation. The excavator is the central machine of the site; the swinging boom on the rotating platform, the over-extended arm with a full bucket and crush scenarios set the focus points of the control.

Inspection Items

  • Boom and arm: Cylinder scratch-pit damage, chrome surface, seal leakage; hose armour integrity and burst valves; boom-arm pin-bushing clearance, crack and weld-repair trace scan; bucket tooth-pin wear and quick-coupler lock.
  • Slew platform and brake: Slewing ring backlash-bolt torque, platform brake stop behaviour, upper swivel leak; valves cutting boom descent on tip-over.
  • Undercarriage: Track tension, bottom-top rollers, idler and sprocket tooth wear; link pin integrity. On wheeled types: rim-axle and boom suspension control.
  • Cabin and protection: ROPS/FOPS plate-connection integrity, front window guard grid, seatbelt interlock, cabin floor-pedal clearance (jamming); roof falling-object strength.
  • Vision and signal: Rear-side cameras, radar, beacon, horn; blind spot map; night lighting. Dig depth and boom extension limit indicators (LMI-like load sensing where fitted).
  • Engine-electrical: Overspeed cut-off, extinguisher, battery-charging circuit; panel insulation and earthing; loom damage scan.

Periodic Tests and Measurements

Tests begin with the nominal load scenario: droop measurement with full bucket at maximum reach; verification of cylinder damping and holding valves. Pin-bushing play is measured with calipers; clearance beyond the manufacturer band produces jerk and control loss in the boom. The slew test runs sudden brake oscillation and stop on an empty platform; the track test covers tension measurement and free rotation. Hydraulic oil sampling tracks pump wear particles; thermography finds cooler-brake-pump hot spots. Weld repair on ROPS connections voids the certificate and mandates part replacement.

Legislation and Standards

The control is mandatory under Law No. 6331, the self-propelled machinery annexes of the Work Equipment Regulation and the 2006/42/EC Machinery Directive (at least annually unless otherwise stated). References: general safety TS EN 474-1, excavating machines TS EN 474-2, rollover protection ISO 10269 / ISO 3471, visibility ISO 5006, fluid power ISO 4413 and braking ISO 3450. Pile check and subsoil-utility survey on the dig site tie to the safety procedure as an administrative duty.

Risks, Recommendations and Outcome

Fatal scenarios: dropped bucket load, crush in the dig zone (shared pedestrian-forklift-excavator field), uncontrolled boom descent via hydraulic leak and tipping (soft ground, excessive side load). Rules: no entry under bucket-boom-body; the pedestrian perimeter is barrier-taped; on gradient the machine rests with the bucket on ground. Facilities are recommended shift hose-pin-camera checklists, monthly track tension and an oil analysis programme. At the end of the examination a signed report is issued. Excavator controls are in our Construction Machinery group; see Cable Excavators and Backhoe Loaders, or contact us for a programme.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ on Hydraulic Excavators

Boom arm bucket drop prevention, rope hook, tip-over and slew safety controls on excavators.

It covers the upper structure (cabin-slew-tower) and undercarriage (track-travel) with the boom-arm-bucket lifting group: boom-arm cylinders-hose-pipe and burst drop-prevention valves, pin-bolt-seal joints, track tension-drive-idler, slew tower gearbox-brake-lock, counterweight, ROPS-FOPS-cabin belt, rear-side view-camera-alarm, lighting-signal-horn, emergency stop, lifting hook-load capacity chart and hydraulic oil-pressure. TS EN 474 is the reference; yearly control under the Work Equipment Regulation.

Pedestrian strike in the slew blind spot (excavator perimeter safety), uncontrolled boom-bucket fall (hose burst with no anti-drop valve), tip-over on sloped-crest-soft ground (counterweight tail), rope-hook fault-overload during lifting work (hook load drop-parting), thrown track-loss of control, bucket-under cleaning-intervention under hydraulic pressure, cabin fall-exit-crush. Where lifting accessories (hook-rope-sling) exist they demand a separate lifting-machine proof on their own calendar.

Cylinder stroke-leak-burst-valve function (hold-drop) trial with pipe-hose joint thermal scanning; pin-bolt wear-play measurement; slew tower gearbox-brake-lock function, counterweight restraint; track tension-pin-drive tooth wear; travel brake-parking-hill hold; ROPS-cabin-belt structure; rear-side camera-alarm-horn-lighting-signal; hydraulic pressure limit safety valves; hook-load chart label readability; emergency stop cut. Results are a per-equipment limit-value, finding-levelled report.

Operator licence (extra competency for lift mode); a daily pre-operation card (boom-hydraulic-leak-track-camera-alarm-belt-load). Underground detection (pipe-cable), pedestrian lane-exclusion-access restriction around the machine, tip-over risk assessment (slope-crest-bearing-water), bucket-under cleaning with mechanical lock energy off (LOTO). Rope-hook-sling control for lifting work. Maintenance per the manufacturer calendar (hydraulic oil filter-pin lubrication-brake pads). Records (report-log thermal-certificate-fault) live in the OHS file.
