Woodworking machine periodic inspection is the at-least-annual testing by authorised engineers of machines used in furniture and timber production — jointers, planers/thicknessers, spindle moulders, combination and band-resaw machines: cutter guards, anti-kickback brake feeding, dust-emission and fire safety with the electric-emergency stop chain are examined. Woodworking carries a wide accident spectrum from finger loss to fire, and a large share of sector losses arise from running unprotected or unbraked machines.
Critical Safety Organs
- Jointer and planer: Adjustable cutter sleeve cover (bridge guard), back fence height (angle setting), finger protection combs on in-feed-out-feed; use of spiral (safety) cutter sets rather than open straight knives.
- Spindle moulder: Automatic anti-kickback brake feeding, holder sleeve-cutter block clearance, die clamping; the ban on unbraked and guideless operation.
- Band and thickness machines: Cutter cylinder guarding, reverse feed control and table-front protection; band tension sensing.
- Dust and fire: Cyclone-bunker filtration (TS EN 16187), grounding against fire, spark detection-suppression (if any), waste bin; dust explosion ATEX assessment.
- Electrical: TS EN 60204-1 earthing-insulation-RCD; motor thermal, contactor and brake monitor; cable chain wear; panel thermography.
Periodic Tests and Measurements
- Guards and adjustment: Cover spring tension, bridge guard opening (per EN 847-2/EN 848-1 rule), cutter clearance measurement; interlock delay and bypass trace.
- Brake test: Anti-kickback brake response time and grip pressure; the work ban on unbraked spindles is written into the report.
- Emergency stop chain: Panic button-rope access, stopping time, die-drop prevention on power cut; restart lock.
- Emission: Extraction flow-manifold pressure drop, filter filling; workplace dust level (OEL) sample.
- Occupational health: Noise, lighting, vibration (hand-arm); tight clothing-sleeve band, hearing screening; operator training record.
Legislation and Standards
Woodworking machines are subject to at least annual periodic control under Law No. 6331, the Work Equipment Regulation and fire legislation. Technical references: general safety TS EN 1869, jointer-planer machines TS EN 848-1/TS EN 847, spindle moulders TS EN 1094, band saws TS EN 1870-6, dust extraction TS EN 16187, electrics TS EN 60204-1 and TS EN ISO 12100. Risks, Recommendations and Outcome
Feeding a spindle moulder without brake and sleeve clearance ends with the machine ingesting the work into the operator's hand — the leading cause of finger amputations in the sector. Uncovered jointer-planer feeding and unsupported long stock create both wrap-around and cut risk. Where the dust bunker is not emptied, explosion load grows even with spark suppression; planned emptying and grounding are essential. Facilities are recommended morning brake function tests, the spiral cutter set working rule, PPE audit and periodic OEL measurement. At the end of the examination a signed report is issued. The hazard groups: cutter and chip throw, hand crossing against the feed and pull (entanglement), kickback on router and planer, broken blade-granule fragments, and wood dust fire-explosion (ATEX) with respiratory risk. Missing-slid-broken cutter lid (bare block), broken-worn-loose blade with heavy vibration-runout, misaligned table (jam throw), missing-slid splitter (kickback cause), bypassed door lock (spinning open), long brake time, dead extraction or perforated pipe or clogged filter (fire-explosion-breathing), faulty RCD-earth, loose fence, missing start-lock, torn-tracking sanding belt: red tag. Repair closes with guard stop-time, alignment and ATEX dust verification. Blade change under LOTO with torque sequence, hand distance with push stick-feeder rules, eye-face-cap-respiratory protection trained.
Engineer examination yearly, six-monthly in series furniture production. Manufacturer periods: blade sharpening, block balance (runout), bearing-belt lubrication; daily dust silo-filter discharge sweeping (explosive dust) with periodic cleaning. ATEX review: closed volume dust silo, exhaust fan-filter differential pressure, earthing bonding insulation, spark source (sanding) prevention set and system test log. Training: feed hand distance rule, kickback reaction, blade change sequence torque. Report, ATEX log, instruction and training records enter the OHS-environment file, with breathing air quality measurement kept in the file.
