Conveyor Belt

Periodic inspection of belt conveyors: belt and splice, idlers and drums, brake-tensioning, safety switches and drive electrics. Engineer-signed reports.

Conveyor belt periodic inspection is the examination and testing, at least annually by authorised engineers, of belt conveyor systems that continuously move bulk or piece material. The carrying belt and its splice, idlers and drums, tensioning and brake mechanisms, safety switches and drive electronics are assessed. Because the belt runs continuously, contact-entrapment accidents and rupture-whip risks form the focus of the control.

Conveyor Group and Key Organs

The control covers flat, inclined chevron, roller and belt transfer lines. Critical components:

  • Belt body, carcass and splice (vulcanised or mechanical clip)
  • Drive and return drums, troughing idlers and skirts
  • Tensioning system (screw or weight), cleaning blades
  • Drive: motor-gearbox, coupling, brake and backstop
  • Safety: rip detection, pull-cord stop, speed and misalignment switches, guard covers

Periodic Inspection Items

  • Belt examination: Surface scours, ply separation and edge wear; splice opening-crack control (hole fatigue in mechanical clips); rupture risk assessment by line length and inclination.
  • Drums and idlers: Lagging scrape and surface wear, idler free-spinning and bearing leak noise-heat; tracking adjustment control.
  • Tensioning and brake: Tension weight-screw and rail; brake lining wear, backstop holding; stop-start ramp behaviour.
  • Safety equipment: Pull-cord switch test, rip-deviation detector function trial, relationship of guard covers to safety switches; end-to-end emergency stop chain test.
  • Electrical: Motor insulation and thermal, gearbox oil, panel and cable damage, earthing continuity; inverter parameter-protection thresholds.
  • Environmental: Spillage and accumulation cleaning, return-point pinch zones, fire risk (ATEX assessment in dusty areas) and lighting.

Legislation and Standards

Conveyors fall under machine safety with Law No. 6331, the Work Equipment Regulation, the 2006/42/EC Machinery Directive and product standards: TS EN 620 for belt conveyors, ISO 17704 for steel wire ropes, TS EN ISO 21531 for mechanical design and TS EN ISO 13857 for guarding of moving parts. On lines in explosive atmospheres, ATEX directives and dust regulations are additionally evaluated.

Risks and Operator Recommendations

A large share of conveyor incidents comes from hand-material entrapment at the moving belt-idler nip and from maintenance work with the control forgotten. Therefore energy isolation (LOTO) and pull-cord stopping infrastructure must be prioritised even above covers. A failed belt splice (clip) on long lines causes chain damage by sudden rewind; the splice must be inspected with magnification at every control. Drum lagging scrape makes the belt slip and tears the edge. Material piling under return idlers creates fire and spill risk; cleaning must be in the maintenance calendar. Chronic misalignment leads to edge friction that can reach fire; automatic tracking devices are recommended.

Outcome

Belt-pulley-brake, tension and emergency-stop safety controls on belt conveyors.

The belt conveyor is the uninterrupted artery of production and logistics; yet its wrapping-nip moving parts (pulleys, idlers), the entanglement-shear points and a torn-creased belt produce serious accidents: limb entrapment, belt throwback and rewind accidents are of fatal type. Under the Work Equipment Regulation and machine safety rules (TS EN 620, ISO 5048 approach) a yearly engineer control applies; daily observation stays with the user.

Belt condition (splice-separation, edge tear-wear, length-skirt), idlers (seized-worn rim-frame), pulley lagging-surface wear-alignment; tension (gravity screw) and tracking smoothness, drive motor-gearbox-brake (backstop) and coupling, lubrication-level; safety hardware: emergency pull cord-button at every access point, moving part guards, feed-loading-discharge protection, switch boxes-earthing-bonding, RCD; conveyor-side access platform-step-handrail, cleaning-dust (ATEX conformity on flour-coal explosive lines).

Disabled-dead emergency stop button-cord, burst pulley lagging (belt slip-throw), splicing opening-failure sign, seized-non-turning idler-bearing (fire risk), missing-slipping backstop (rewind on incline), removed-guard exposed, broken earthing-leak: tag and stop the line. Repair with per-unit verification; maintenance under disciplined LOTO (locked out, tagged) is mandatory. Spark-heat findings in ATEX zones carry extra criticality.

Daily sight (belt alignment-sound-clogging-guard), weekly quick check (idler-belt-splice-tension), planned belt-idler replacement periods with a tension-lagging budget; cleaning-corrosion control on food-flour-chemical lines. During maintenance the conveyor must be locked un-startable and access points tagged. The yearly report stays in the OHS file with baselines and past-finding comparison; operator relief training (emergency-stop-cleaning procedure) is managed by instruction.
