Grinding Machine

Periodic inspection of grinding machines: wheel guards, speed matching, magnetic table and workpiece clamping checks by engineers with signed reports.

Grinding machine periodic inspection is the at-least-annual testing by authorised engineers of surface and cylindrical grinders and pedestal grinders: wheel guard, wheel-speed matching, workpiece clamping and magnetic chuck safety with the electrical equipment are examined. Grinding needs special attention because a fragile abrasive disc spinning at high speed carries burst risk; a wheel burst throws fragments causing severe injury.

Critical Safety Organs

  • Wheel guard: Steel enclosure around the wheel; opening angle limited per the standard (work gap below about 90°), guard positioned on the wheel escape side and securely mounted.
  • Wheel-speed match: Comparison of the wheel maximum free speed (RPM) label against spindle speed; detection of cracked-worn wheels and wrong flange-washer mounting.
  • Balancing and holding: Wheel balance check, clamping nut torque; magnetic chuck holding force verification and workpiece clamping.
  • Cooling: Grinding fluid jet-splash screen, fume extraction; tank hygiene (microbial contamination).
  • Control-electrical: Emergency stop, wheel brake, guard interlock; TS EN 60204-1 earthing-insulation; RCD; panel condition.

Periodic Tests and Measurements

  • Wheel mounting and balance: Flange-cleaning control, balance test, crack tap-listen and visual crack scan.
  • Speed verification: Tachometer measurement of spindle speed and match with wheel max-RPM label; over-speed risk investigation.
  • Guard integrity: Guard opening measurement, mounting bolts and vibration control (TS EN 12413 wheel safety).
  • Magnetic chuck: On-off response, holding force control, cable connection; chip build-up cleaning on the face.
  • Occupational health: Dust-emission, noise, lighting; PPE (face shield, goggles, safety shoe) policy; glove rule.

Legislation and Standards

Grinding machines are subject to at least annual periodic control under Law No. 6331 and the Work Equipment Regulation. Technical references: surface and cylindrical grinder safety TS EN 12417 / TS EN 13218, grinding wheel safety TS EN 12413, hand-held grinders TS EN 792, electrics TS EN 60204-1 and general principles TS EN ISO 12100. Under the regulation a grinder without guard or with a mismatched wheel is not used; the finding is graded "critical".

Risks, Recommendations and Outcome

The most dangerous non-compliance is running with the guard removed for wider access or exceeding the speed label; worn felts and uneven clamping cause unbalanced spin and burst. Facilities are recommended a no-load trial after a new wheel, periodic balance control, immediate destruction of cracked wheels and mandatory face protection. At the end of the examination a signed report with measurements and findings is issued.
