Earthing and Lightning Protection System

Earthing and lightning protection contracting: electrodes-bar, external-internal LPS, equipotential bonding, SPDs with measurement and acceptance.

Earthing and lightning protection systems are two integrated protective infrastructures holding touch voltage and lightning effects within safe limits. Earthing disperses leakage and fault current to earth to operate the protection device; lightning protection (LPS) controls the direct strike, side effect (separation) and overvoltage. Our contracting covers design, earth electrodes and busbar, external air-terminal-conductor, internal equipotential bonding and SPD installation with measurement-acceptance.

Earthing System

  • Electrode and conductor: Copper rod, ring, strip or plate electrodes placed and sized by soil resistivity. Around the main earth bar (MTB), the building metallic reinforcement, services and panel PE conductor join in an equipotential chain; section and corrosion protection per manufacturer-standard rules.
  • Regime and selectivity: Earth-neutral link per TN-S/TN-C-S/TT regime; coordination via leakage and short-circuit current tripping the devices (earth measurement).

Lightning Protection (LPS)

  • External LPS: Air terminals and mesh, protection angle per TS EN 62305-3 risk analysis (LPS Class I-IV); down conductors on support spacing, bend and test socket; separation distance of down conductors preserved.
  • Internal LPS and bonding: Equipotential bar and zone protection; SPD diverting overvoltage on power-signal lines to earth; control fit.
  • Measurement and acceptance: Vertical resistance (fall-out-of-potential), continuity (milliohm), separation and insulation trials; conformity to the regulation (1-2 year) and standard limits reported.

Legislation and Outcome

The system is built under Law No. 6331, the Earthing Regulation, Construction Safety rules and the TS EN 62305 series (LPS design-inspection-maintenance). Measurement is by licensed engineers with calibrated instruments and the result label stays visible on the board. A system jointly protecting life safety and continuity in lightning-leakage scenarios is kept alive with a periodic control from day one. This service in our High Current Contracting heading is planned integrated with periodic control; for survey-quotation reach us on the contact page.

Maintenance, Measurement and Life Safety

Protection systems need supervision through their life as much as on installation day: before storm season the external LPS conductors and joints are visually checked, test sockets are kept accessible for measurement, and internal bonding and SPD status indicators are read periodically. Earth-resistance measurement renews at the regulatory intervals; whether a rise is seasonal or electrode corrosion is separated by trend. Whenever a new structural element (roof, panel, antenna) is added, a system revision is mandatory — a forgotten bond shortens the protection chain. Results are marked and labelled on an as-built sketch; after a strike or leakage event, damage assessment and power-line clearance checks follow the written procedure.

FAQ on Earthing & Lightning Protection

Installation-measurement-periodic control of earthing-bonding-equipotential systems and lightning protection.

It builds earthing (electrode-bar-conductor), potential equalisation (main-equal bar-metal mass bonding), lightning protection (air termination-mesh-down conductors-surge protection) and SPD stage coordination as one combined system: while the lightning current (around 200 kA) disperses in the earth, the touch voltage of facility-equipment-operator stays under limit. The earth resistance design criterion (e.g. below 10 ohm, 1 ohm for static-sensitive sites) is tracked.

The TS EN 62305 series (risk-management-design-installation-maintenance), the Earthing and Internal Electrical Installations Regulations, conductor section-material-bonding corrosion (copper-clad steel minimum section in soil), down conductor position-separation distance (side flash), SPD stages (Tip 1-2-3 coordination), joint connection (exothermic-crimp) continuity, foundation-steel-ready bar integration, cable tray-structural metal bonding; the measurement-control point (test pit) is a design input.

Earth electrode resistance (rod fallout or suitable clamp), loop impedance, milliohm continuity scan (every bonding point), equipotential bonding continuity, soil resistivity (Wenner multi-electrode layer model) design verification; a lightning current injection test on suitable systems, SPD insulation control, structural metal cage continuity (mesh-door-window-bracing bonding). The result, in the earthing control and lightning inspection report format, hands over to the periodic calendar.

The rising earth resistance trend (electrode corrosion-soil humidity change-break), the air termination-down conductor mechanical damage and post-strike insulation joint, the SPD status window-blown card (thermal watch), joint corrosion-manshon wear, facade repair-door-window renewal metal bond break. Period: TS EN 62305-3; the lightning rod yearly before lightning season; earthing yearly, on high demand twice; records stay presentable in the OHS-audit-fire-insurance files.
