Industrial Racks

Periodic inspection of warehouse racking: plumb survey, upright-beam connections, anchors, impact damage grading and capacity label audit per FEM/EN 15635.

Industrial rack periodic inspection is the at-least-annual audit by authorised engineers of pallet storage racking (selective, drive-in, narrow aisle/VNA, cantilever and mezzanine platforms): carrier upright-beam-bracket integrity, geometry, anchor tightness and impact damage are examined under FEM 10.2.02 rules within the TS EN 15512/15635/15629 framework. Racking is work equipment, and a damaged member carries the domino collapse risk of the whole line.

Inspection Items

  • Damage detection: Upright buckling and beam deflection from forklift strikes; the colour-coded grading of EN 15635 — green (minor: monitor), amber (major: plan unload), red (critical: immediate unload and replacement). Upright bending above one percent and plumb deviation form the threshold of critical acceptance.
  • Geometry: Total plumb-level measurement (laser), guide rail straightness (critical on VNA and drive-in), locator tab seating gaps and pin-lock integrity.
  • Connection and anchoring: Tightness of base plate-concrete anchor bolts, erosion in anchor holes; completeness of the bolt-nut inventory.
  • Capacity match: Comparison of rack plaques against actual load distribution; beam overload traces, sagging empty beams, pallet-beam support mismatch. A static calculation analysis is proposed where needed.
  • Support gear: Soundness of rear ties, end guards and column protectors; aisle width-pedestrian line layout.

Legislation and Standards

The Work Equipment Regulation requires periodic control of warehouse racking (at least annually as a general rule, tightened in heavy traffic) and the withdrawal of damaged members. Technical references: operations and use TS EN 15635, static design TS EN 15512, fabrication tolerances TS EN 15620 and project rules TS EN 15629. In seismic zones the rack-bracket-structure connection is verified against TDY 2018 acceleration values with FEM 10.2.08 approaches. The report — with damage map, measurements and photo evidence — is an audit and insurance file input.

Risks and Operator Recommendations

The most common field error is continuing operation without unloading a red-tagged upright: a damaged upright transfers load to neighbouring frames and triggers cascading collapse. Pallets overhanging the beam spoil load-centre and capacity calculations. Aisle speed-height rules with column protector barriers absorb impact energy. Facilities are recommended the monthly self-assessment plus annual authorised control rule, a damage recording form and an emergency unload procedure; welded repair of damaged members is strictly prohibited.

TS EN 15635 damage audit, plumb-anchor and load plate rules for storage rack systems.

Storage racks carry high stacking loads in thin-walled steel framing; one forklift impact, overload or loose anchor permanently deforms an upright or beam, and damage accumulates into progressive collapse. TS EN 15635 (use-management of racking) gives the operator weekly observation and at least one yearly detailed audit by a competent person, and TS EN 15512 the design rules. The audit is mandatory to preserve load capacity and people-vehicle safety.

Upright integrity-plumb (permitted deviation), beam deformation-hook-pin connection, anchor-nut tightness-floor cracks, decking-load distribution, floor plan-load plate (SWL) visibility-conformity, impact protectors (upright-pallet-foot), rear-frame bracing and seismic reinforcement integrity, aisle width-pedestrian-vehicle passage, rust-corrosion-under-paint. Damage is entered on a location-upright-beam map with green-amber-red level tags.

Red level: upright-beam deformation beyond permitted limits, broken-dislodged beam lock-pin, loose-broken anchor, overloaded (above SWL) or unevenly spread deck, visible sag-nose. These bays are emptied and out of service immediately and reloaded only after authorised part change (welding-reshaping unacceptable) with engineer verification. Amber: reduce load, planned repair; green: monitor. If repair after a forklift hit is delayed the damage spreads — fast intervention is essential.
