Expansion tank and hydrophore periodic inspection is the at-least-annual audit, by authorised engineers, of the pressurised components of membrane vessels that absorb water expansion in closed heating and hot water systems, and of hydrophore booster sets that pressurise mains water. Body soundness, safety devices and functional behaviour are assessed.
What Are These Systems and Why Are They Pressure Vessels?
An expansion tank is a steel pressure vessel containing a membrane (rubber diaphragm/bladder) that absorbs the volume increase of heated system water and prevents pressure from rising to dangerous levels. A hydrophore is an automatic pressurisation unit of pumps, a pressure switch and usually a small pressure tank. Because both operate under continuous pressure, they are treated as pressure vessels under work equipment legislation; a ruptured membrane filling the shell with water, a corroded pressure tank or a defeated safety device can lead to serious incidents. Key components:
- Tank shell, membrane and filling/valve port
- Safety valve, pressure gauge and vacuum breaker (on boiler lines)
- Pressure switch, check valve and thermal protection on hydrophores
- Connection lines, supports and vibration dampers
Operations During the Periodic Inspection
- Body examination: Search for external corrosion, rot under paint and weld condition; moisture trace check at the lower support zone — the point that determines tank life.
- Pre-charge (filling) check: Measuring and adjusting the air pre-charge of membrane tanks against system pressure; a waterlogged (dead) vessel is the clearest sign of membrane rupture.
- Membrane test: Air leakage observation at the filling valve and integrity evaluation of the membrane.
- Safety devices: Safety valve set pressure, gauge accuracy, and pressure switch cut-in/cut-out points on hydrophores.
- Installation integrity: Line leaks, support elements and vibration damage control.
Legislation and Standards
Inspections are made under Law No. 6331 and the Regulation on Health and Safety Conditions in the Use of Work Equipment. Technical references are TS EN 13445 (pressure vessels), TS EN 13831 (heating expansion vessels), TS EN 805 (water supply pressurisation) and the 2014/68/EU (PED) Directive. Membrane vessels in contact with water must also meet drinking water hygiene requirements. Unless otherwise foreseen, the interval is at least once a year.
Risks and Operator Recommendations
The most frequent problem in facilities is an unmeasured, overdue pre-charge: a vessel with low pre-charge cannot absorb expansion water, and continuous discharge from the pressure relief valve begins — both an energy loss and, if the valve seizes, a dangerous pressure accumulation. On hydrophore tanks, membrane fatigue combined with foot corrosion may let the pressurised shell shift and strain its connection line, a real field observation. Frequent pump cycling (short-cycling) damages the check valve; such fault signs are fed back to the facility maintenance plan as report inputs. Storage below 60°C in hot water systems raises Legionella risk and is noted separately in the report.

FAQ on Expansion Tank & Hydrophore
The hydrophore supply set and the closed expansion tank belong to the same pressure regime: the membrane vessel's pre-charge relates to the pump start-stop values — if pre-charge falls, the vessel joins late, the system hammers-hydrofores and the pump runs short-hot. On non-membrane (open) expansion lines the level-overflow-freeze risks are audited. The mutual fit of the two is the guarantee of installation pressure.
Closed expansion vessels of pressure-equipment nature and hydrophore sets fall under the Work Equipment Regulation periodic inspection; on pressure volumes the interval cannot exceed one year, with pre-charge and membrane state re-verified at every annual control and after any mounting change. Pump-mechanical seal, pressure switch and RCD protection are tracked by the operating calendar; user-level visual check is recommended monthly.
Vessel pre-charge measurement (air valve-charging) and zero-point verification, membrane puncture-air loss test; pump working pressure-flow operating point, start-stop-cut set compatibility, pressure switch-transducer calibration, non-return check valve and lift line control, gauge verification; RCD-earthing continuity (electrical), seal drip-cleanliness; on open (expansion line) systems, level, air-vapour relief and freeze protection (heat trace-insulation) audit.
A vessel with torn membrane, a waterlogged expansion volume (zero pre-charge) or a hydrophore set with dead switch-protection chain runs under over-pressure-water hammer-cavitation risk with unprotected pumps. The report produces out-of-service warnings for these critical findings; after replacement-repair the pressure regime is rebuilt.
