Personal Protective Equipment Selection and Periodic Inspection
PPE is the last layer of the hierarchy of controls but the most visible fortress. This guide covers hazard-PPE matching, the periodic examination of harnesses and hard hats, and the shelf-life-storage rules.
Personal protective equipment (PPE) is selected by the hazard type in the risk assessment: certified particle class for dust-vapour-fume, full body harness with energy absorber and rescue plan for height work, gloves for mechanical risk, eye-ear protection for radiation-noise. PPE is the last layer — elimination at source and engineering control (the machine-tool examination audits guard functionality too) come first; PPE is the body-protecting promise for the remaining risk.

PPE Also Needs Periodic Examination
Fall-protection gear (harness, lanyard, block, anchor sling) is subject to periodic examination per manufacturer instruction and legislation: webbing-stitch-deformation, metal crack-corrosion, buckle-locking function, and immediate removal after a fall arrest (hidden damage). Shelf life, storage condition (UV-moisture-chemical) and conformity (CE-EN) labels are logged. Compressed-air cleaning habits damage the protective gear and create risk of their own.
Compliance Culture
- Access: right size-right class stock; the training-use-habit trio (PPE worn wrongly does not protect).
- Records: issue-examination-change book; faulty PPE joins the destroy chain with a red tag.
- Supervision: field observation cards, feedback-improvement loop; on the noise-dust side measurement integration with air-quality links from installation controls.
