Forklift Periodic Inspection: Legal Requirements and Intervals
Forklifts are lifting machines needing yearly periodic inspection. This article covers how the fork-mast-hydraulic and brake balance is audited, the ROPS-belt and rear view duties, the pre-shift check card and the authority-training record system.
Forklift periodic inspection is the competent engineer measurement-function-test audit of the lifting members (fork, mast, chain, hydraulic cylinder), the travel-brake system, the rollover protection structure (ROPS) and the operator safety gear — belt, horn, reverse view, light-sound alarms. The forklift is one of the rare machines sharing the corridor with pedestrians in warehouses; it sits at the crossing of strike-tip-fall accidents. Legal Basis and Interval
Under Law No. 6331 and the Work Equipment Regulation the forklift, as a lifting machine, is subject to periodic control at least once a year. The pre-shift operator check is a separate layer — brake, audible warning, fork, leak and belt. Heavy shifts, steep ramps and cold-coastal sites are reasons to shorten the period. The report lives in the OHS file and is presented in audits.
Scope of the Control
- Lifting chain: fork tip wear and weld cracks, chain tension sync, mast channel-bearing play and the lowering (anti-burst) valve function.
- Brake-travel: service brake distance (loaded-empty), parking hill hold, steering play-rod wear, rim-tyre integrity.
- Safety structure: ROPS-FOPS cage integrity, seat belt and seat lock, horn-reverse alarm and blue light-pedestrian warning.
- Hydraulic-leak: cylinder-hose-pipe seepage; thermal camera scan of hot pump-valve points.
- Capacity: load-centre chart plate readability — a missing label alone is a major finding.
