Explosive Dust Atmosphere and ATEX: Industrial Measures Guide
Dust explosions are more common than believed: flour, sugar, wood, coal, aluminium. This article explains the five conditions, the zone map and the prevention architecture — ventilation-filter-venting-Ex equipment — in engineering practice.
An explosive dust atmosphere is the scenario where combustible particles suspended in air produce pressure-flame-fragment throw on meeting an igniter. Five conditions speak instead of the dust triangle: combustible dust, airborne at a certain concentration, enclosed-semi-enclosed volume, oxygen and ignition source. Millwork-sawdust packaging-metal grinding-coal-food drying line — all are potential ATEX areas; it is not the dust itself but the missing discipline that explodes.
Zone and Prevention Architecture
- Zone 20/21/22: the frequency of the explosive dust cloud; the risk assessment starts with the zone map, the equipment category choice (Zone-20 device) and the procedures.
- Prevention: dust leak control (gasket-suction-cleaning plan — the settled dust layer is the second igniter: the dust raised by the first explosion is the fuel of the second), hot-surface-friction-spark source management.
- Limits: explosion suppression, venting panels, isolation valve; the filter-cyclone-bunker side sits within industrial process installation inspection.
ATEX Equipment and Earthing
Inside the zone the motor-fan-fitting-instrument: Ex protection type (for dust the IP and surface temperature class, T-class) labelled and project-conform. On the moving-electrical side, earthing-bonding continuity is vital in high current installation controls: an insulation fault or static discharge creates a spark in the gas-dust atmosphere. Continuity-insulation-heating measurements join the periodic programme with thermal camera scanning. Ventilation-suction performance is verified by ventilation installation inspection, the pressure conveying line integrity by the compressed air installation examination.
Operator Checklist
- Is the explosive dust inventory (Kst-dPdt, MIE, fine-coarse fraction) and critical concentration data in hand?
- Does the zone map match the equipment categories, electrical-mechanical?
- Is there a spark-hot-surface procedure in filter-cyclone-bunker maintenance?
- Are the wash-cleaning period and settled dust layer check under record?
- Is hot work (grinding-welding) permitted only with zone gas-dust measurement?
Dust explosions are rare but they are messengers: the small flash events of the same site pile up silently because they are not reported. Do not wait for the wreckage — listen to the whisper.
