Testing and Commissioning Process in Medium Voltage Systems
Energising an MV panel and line happens through engineering acceptance. This article summarises the MV test sequence — insulation, high voltage withstand, contact resistance, relay injection — and the commissioning documentation.
Medium voltage (MV) systems carry energy in the 1-36 kV triangle of transformer-busbar-cable-cell. The first energising of an MV facility or its commissioning after fault-repair is the highest-risk moment: a hidden insulation defect, a wrong relay setting or a contact resistance waits until the first load or the first short circuit. So commissioning is not turning a switch but a test series and acceptance process. (MV testing and commissioning)
The Test Sequence
- 1. Insulation: megger insulation resistance of winding-bar-line; trend comparison with temperature-humidity correction. (LVD insulation test)
- 2. Withstand: type-assembly or post-repair AC/DC withstand; advanced measurement in partial discharge doubt. (MV transformer test)
- 3. Circuit-bonding: cell contactor-main joint contact resistance (micro-ohm), earthing switch function, panel bar torque log.
- 4. Protection relays: secondary injection scenario test of overcurrent-earth-differential; breaker trip time-mechanical life verification.
- 5. Transformer side: turns ratio, vector group, loss-reactance, oil breakdown (DBV) and furan analyses.
Acceptance and Documentation
The MV/LV project-acceptance-conformity file consists of measurement values-setting list-single line diagram-cell instruction-switching procedure and the first-energising protocol. After the tests all trip-clearing sequence, load stages (no-load-loaded), protection coordination selectivity study and operator-authority-backup plans are documented. The owner's duty is connecting the tests to the annual periodic control calendar; the first-year trend becomes the reference of later years.
Continuity in Operation
The MV cell wears over time with dust-moisture-vibration; a yearly insulation-contactor-thermal scan check, a comprehensive test-renewal every 10-12 years. After expansion-renovation; the affected cell-cable-protection trio sees retest-recoordination. MV forgives no error: an insulation weakness and a relay setting fault become a cascading outage or an arc at the first fault. A plant wanting energy continuity runs its panels with test-report-statistics — talking decisions, not breakdowns.
