Air Compressor and Compressed Air Plant Periodic Inspection
Compressed air is the fourth utility of the plant. This guide covers the periodic control of the compressor-dryer-tank line, the audit of safety devices, the hydrostatic tank proof and energy-leak management.
Compressed air is the fourth utility of the modern factory after electricity-water-ventilation: pneumatic cylinders, painting, blowing, tools and packaging draw from it. The compressor and the pressure air tank at its heart are both an energy-efficiency and a pressure-safety point. As the tank is a pressure vessel it is subject to the periodic inspection and hydrostatic proof calendar; on the compressor and plant side a mechanical-electrical safety audit runs under compressed air installation inspection.
Safety Gear: The Critical Trio
- Safety valve: the last fuse emptying the tank above the set limit — calibration-full lift-set label; a strapped or plugged valve is the most dangerous finding on the tank.
- Pressure switch: cut-in-cut-out settings; prevents the compressor from running continuously past pressure and burning on short cycling.
- Condensate drain: water pooling at the tank bottom brings corrosion and pressure-slam risk; automatic drain function and daily manual blow-down check.
Tank and Line Examination
On the tank: inner-outer corrosion, weld integrity, gauge calibration, feet-anchor and safety mounting; in periodic control checked by thickness measurement and eye. On the plant the leak is the costliest silent expense: one leak means the compressor works for nothing. The thermal camera control with acoustic mapping catches the energy leak and the overheating joint; on dryers and filters the dew point and pressure drop are measured — a bypassed filter carries moisture downstream and speeds pipe corrosion; verifies dryer-filter bypasses and pressure drops.
Operator Routine
- Is tank condensate blown every shift start, automatic drain working?
- Are safety valve and pressure switch within stamp-set range?
- Is gauge calibration current, line leak measured?
- Is the hydrostatic-proof thickness report renewed on time?
