LPG and Gas Cylinder Safety: Periodic Inspection Guide
LPG and compressed gas plants carry a dual risk — flammability plus pressure energy. The guide summarises cylinder-tank periodic examination, safety valve and regulator checks, leak testing and separation distance rules.
LPG and gas cylinder safety is the control of the dual risk carried by liquefied and compressed gases — flammability and pressure energy. Cylinders and tanks are subject to periodic examination and hydrostatic proof calendars; on the plant side the regulator, safety valve-coupling connections, line tightness tests and the gas detection-automatic cut-off chain are audited. Pressure vessel legislation runs together with the Fire Buildings Regulation layout-distance-burner rules.
Audit Items
- Cylinder-tank examination: stamp-date tracking, outer corrosion-repair trace, valve-safety element integrity; rejecting unsuitable packaging at the filling point is the operator guard.
- Regulators and valves: outlet pressure setting, excess flow cut-off and backflow prevention functions, gasket wear; plant gauges calibrated.
- Line integrity: pipe-flexible connection-tightness test (soap-detector), support-crossing protection and wear control; gas alarm-cut solenoid scenario trial is woven into the detection inspection.
- Layout: tank distance-sewer-channel relation, bund wall-ventilation, extinguisher access and warning plates.
Anatomy of the Accident
LPG accidents usually arrive with a triple combination: unsuitable connection + expired hardware + missing detection. Leaking gas advances toward the lower explosive limit in a closed volume; one spark starts the flashback-fireball scenario. Therefore not a single cylinder change but the whole chain is audited: stock-layout-plant-detection-extinguishing-response-plan. Gas manifold and alarm integration on the installation side sits with our low current contracting; the boiler-room pressure side is planned within pressure vessel periodic inspection.
Checklist for the Operator
- Are cylinder-tank fill-stock records and examination dates tracked?
- Has the alarm-cut chain (detector-solenoid-announcement) passed its last scenario test?
- Are regulator and flexible connections within manufacturer life?
- Is the extinguisher type (powder/CO2) and access right?
- Are the inspection and examination reports current in the OHS file?
