Ergonomics is the fit between job-human-environment, preventing musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) and protecting productivity. Disc herniation, tendinitis, sinus congestion, neck-disc problems arrive as the accumulation of years and end in disability before retirement. MSD is not a single event like an accident but the product of repeated load-strain — so design and continuity replace one-off measurement.

Manual Lifting: Compute the Limit

The Manual Handling Table in the regulation is an assessment counting every factor — weight, distance-twist-frequency, grip-pinch. Instead of a fixed start mass; the ideal weight is shortened by factor multipliers: height-lowering, twisting, poor grasp, duration-effort. Weight alone is not the criterion — frequency and posture matter more. When the result exceeds the limit, the solution is not manual but mechanical: crane-hoist-manipulator or transfer cart. If the mechanical aid's periodic inspection (lifting and handling machines) is disconnected from the ergonomic fix, the risk merely changes place.

Station and Posture Layout

  • Sitting work: screen-eye distance-viewing angle, elbow at 90°, foot rest; micro-break plan in monotonous work.
  • Assembly line: working height at elbow level, material inside the reach arc — avoiding repeated above-shoulder and crouched head-down positions.
  • Hand tools: the vibration-firm-grip-wrist-bend trio (POST/REBA scoring); for pneumatic-battery tools a maintenance-period plan in the spirit of press-tool inspection.
  • Lifting aid: sling-hanging device, spring balancer-block; fixing the part in the air erases the shoulder-wrist load.

How to Build the Programme?

The ergonomics programme is a chain of risk map-on-site assessment-engineering fix-follow-up: discomfort reports (pain survey) are early warning, near-miss observation is data, improvement awards are the cultural fuel. Physical agent measurements —noise, vibration, thermal comfort— renew periodically within tests and analyses; the station is re-scored at every design change. MSD is the health issue where prevention is cheapest and treatment dearest: compute, fix, follow up, repeat.
