Safety and Periodic Inspection in Conveyor Belt Systems
Conveyors are a source of fatal accidents through entanglement, roller nip and belt failure. This article ties the engineering guarding of nip points, the pull-cord stop and thermal bearing control to periodic examination.
Conveyor belt systems carry the same two risks across grain, mine, packaging or assembly lines without distinction: entanglement (belt-roller-drive gap) and uncontrolled motion (a stopped belt suddenly starting). An unguarded roller, crossing a moving line, a disabled emergency stop — the classic scene of a fatal accident on this equipment. That is why the conveyor belt periodic inspection runs alongside the machine-tool examination.
Nip Points and Protection
- Drive-drum junction: fixed guard at the belt entry, safety switch if removed for maintenance, nip gap closed in the feed zone.
- Tensioner roller: barrier around the moving weight-roller, falling-part protection.
- Transfer point: belt-belt collision line, dust-spill cover; protection distance where worker access exists.
Emergency Stop and Lock
On long lines the pull-cord emergency stop guarantees a halt from every access point; in the periodic control the cord-cut-trigger function and tag spacing are tried. On the maintenance side the LOTO standard: no one touches the belt until the drive motor-feed and control circuit are cut-locked. The heat analysis of rotating-electrical parts via the thermal camera control; bearing-source overheating caught before failure.

The costliest fault on a belt is not the downtime but the hand lost in an unguarded roller. Verify the guard and estop chain visually every shift, by measurement yearly: passage along the line must be via bridges-stairs, never under or over the belt. Before the control the line is stopped and LOTO applied; belt tension and tracking are measured at rest.
