Fire safety is a system where the evacuation plan, extinguishing gear, detection-announcement and their regular audit run together. This article summarises the essential measures, inspection intervals from portable extinguishers to gas systems and the duties of the Fire Buildings Regulation.
Workplace fire safety is the set of measures built to manage the combustible load, keep the escape route open and detect-suppress the fire in its first minute: extinguishing gear, detection-announcement, training and periodic audit work together. Fire safety is a management process; buying an extinguisher is not the duty — keeping the system alive is. Essential Measures
- 1. Evacuation plan and drill: escape routes, assembly point, disabled-user plan and at least one yearly drill — the backbone of the regulation.
- 2. Extinguishing gear: location-type-count of portable units; portable extinguisher inspection covers yearly service, five-yearly hydrostatic proof and hydrant-sprinkler readiness.
- 3. Detection and alarm: smoke-heat detectors, call point, siren-announcement; the annual check of fire detection-alarm is verified with scenario trials.
- 4. Fuel-energy isolation: tightness and automatic cut-off chains around gas, LPG, electrical panels and hot oil.
- 5. Training and awareness: extinguisher training, evacuation marshals, response cards and the record system.

The Engineering Layer in Risk Reduction
The Regulation on Protection Against Fire in Buildings defines which system is compulsory by building height, area, capacity and hazard class — sprinkler, automatic detection, smoke control, emergency lighting and signage thresholds are resolved here. In design and installation, the integration of detection with suppression (announcement, door release, damper-fan scenario) is verified in acceptance tests; in operation the yearly control cuts the price of the silent alarm or the closed zone in a real fire.
