Safety Data Sheets and Storage Rules for Chemicals

Chemical management starts with reading the SDS: substance-mixture class, precaution statements, personal protection and spill scenario. This article covers the SDS-label-field triangle, storage incompatibility and ventilation-plant inspection links.

Safety Data Sheets and Storage Rules for Chemicals

The safety data sheet (SDS) is the identity card of a chemical in sixteen sections: hazard classification, first aid, firefighting, accidental release, handling-storage, exposure controls, physical-chemical properties, stability, toxicological-ecological effect, disposal, transport, regulation, information. The form is the background of the hazard-label-GHS pictogram chain and the source producing the right decision in the field. A missing or outdated SDS means the chemical inventory is incomplete.

From SDS to Field: The Critical Four

SectionField meaning
2 — Hazard identificationPictogram-signal word; permit-prohibition thresholds
7 — Handling-storageIncompatibility separation, temperature-ventilation rule
8 — Exposure controlsPPE class (mask-glove), OEL value, local exhaust
10 — Stability-reactivitySelf-reaction, forbidden combinations (acid + cyanide)

Storage Discipline

Order in the chemical store is built not by shelf but by the compatibility matrix: oxidisers-fuels apart, acids-bases apart, oxidisers away from combustibles; secondary containment capacity, fire wall and room separation. In handling, the spill scenario drill, suitable absorbent stock instead of sand-sawdust and, against explosion, earth-bonding (earthing) are audited. Ventilation function — especially at the closed-volume storage point — is tried periodically: fan flow and differential pressure measured, reported within ventilation installation inspection.

Plant and Process Side

The chemical is a risk inside the process as well as the store: closed process-line-valve integrity, leak detection and automatic cut-off; the reactor-boiler side is followed by pressure vessel examination (installation periodic inspection). At filling-weighing stations the static discharge is the commonest trigger outside lightning season — bonding continuity cannot be verified without measurement. In laboratory-maintenance chemicals the small-package-many-item table raises mixing-mislabelling risk: the whole inventory must be recorded with the seriousness of production raw material.
