Machine Safety: CE Marking and Its Relation to Periodic Inspection

CE is the birth record of the machine, periodic inspection the lifetime health follow-up. This article covers the CE-standard relation, light curtain and emergency stop trials and where LVD electrical audits stand.

Machine Safety: CE Marking and Its Relation to Periodic Inspection

The CE certificate is the manufacturer declaration that the machine met the essential requirements (Machinery Safety Regulation and harmonised standards) before being placed on the market; periodic inspection documents with engineering measurement that the machine is still safe in the field — after mounting, wear, unauthorised intervention and years of accumulating damage. One guards the design-production gate, the other the operation gate. They are complements, not alternatives.

The Post-CE Safety Chain

  • Risk assessment: hazard zones (crush, cut, entanglement, throw), residual risk and the control hierarchy; the essence of the technical file.
  • Protective gear: guard-cover interlock, light curtain, two-hand control, emergency stop; performance level (PL) verified per ISO 13849.
  • Electrical safety: insulation, earth-bonding continuity, leakage and withstand tests; the panel-machine interface tracked by the LVD insulation test.
  • Operator examination: brake-stroke-guard-runout-safety-circuit measurement within machine and tool periodic inspection; press-brake-CNC-sander special criteria sets.

Safety Layers That Break Most

FaultHow it arisesConsequence
Bypassed light curtainAlarm-production pressureCut-crush (fatal)
Broken door switchMechanical wear-rush passageContact with rotating part
Bypassed safety valveMaintenance convenienceUnintended motion-entrapment
Broken bondingAfter move-renovationElectric shock

Both Together: CE + Control

On second-hand, modified or long-stopped machines; updating the risk assessment and technical file precedes the control. A bypass or worn guard caught in control closes with procedure-authority if the root is administrative, with change-verification if technical. Thus the machine park protects for its whole life what CE gave at birth; our PL analysis and LVD tests service verifies the target reliability class of the safety circuits.
